ChapterAs Solomon lies down to sleep, he asks for wisdom. An angel answers him. Another introduction to the Greater Key places the revelation beneath the trees, in the light of a blazing star.
ChapterIn the Lansdowne introduction, Solomon explains a world inhabited by celestial, planetary and elemental spirits. Their duties reach from the motion of the stars to the preservation of human lives.
ChapterSolomon gives Roboam an inheritance more precious than riches: the knowledge gathered into the Key, with instructions for studying and preserving it.
ChapterBabylonian philosophers find the Key in an ivory casket while repairing Solomon’s tomb. They possess the book, but cannot understand it until one of their company seeks divine help.
ChapterThe Lemegeton introduces another account of Solomon’s learning: prayers at the Temple altar, Michael’s revelation and notes written by the divine hand or finger.
ChapterCrowned riders, changing beasts, teachers and treasure-finders fill the Goetia’s seventy-two notices. Their recorded forms, offices and companies of spirits differ from one name to the next.
ChapterThe people of Babylon opened a brass vessel expecting treasure. Inside were the seventy-two spirits and their legions, bound there by Solomon.
ChapterSolomon’s name travelled with books, languages and figures. Later manuscripts and printed editions preserved different accounts of his teaching, while translators and editors worked through uncertain names, words and drawings.
Pentacle · SunA bearded face confronts the viewer beneath a declaration of universal obedience. The Key calls it the countenance of Shaddai; Mathers sees Metatron, the Almighty’s representative and Prince of Countenances.
Pentacle · SunSolar spirits are described as proud and arrogant; this pentacle is intended to bring that pride under command. Eight differently tipped spokes lie inside a band naming four angels.
Pentacle · SunTwelve repetitions of God’s four-letter name fill two overlapping squares. Around them runs a statement of everlasting kingdom, accompanying claims of empire, renown, glory and the power to inflict loss.
Pentacle · SunUncovering this solar pentacle is said to make otherwise invisible spirits appear immediately. Its radiating characters surround Hebrew divine names and a prayer that the speaker’s eyes be filled with light.
Pentacle · SunSpirits summoned by the fifth Sun pentacle are said to carry a person a long distance in a short time. Its outer verse describes angels keeping the traveller’s ways and bearing the traveller in their hands.
Pentacle · SunDarkened eyes and eyes that cannot see enclose the Sun’s invisibility pentacle. Within its triangle, two magical alphabets carry a divine name and a central letter; a longer inscription left Mathers uncertain.
Pentacle · SunGold is set against iron in the final Sun pentacle: its presence is said to free a prisoner from confinement or fetters immediately. Elemental angels fill the cross inside a verse of release and thanksgiving.
Pentacle · MoonNo fastening is meant to resist the Moon’s first pentacle. Its gateway is filled with divine and angelic names, while a verse recalls brass gates broken and iron bars cut apart.
Pentacle · MoonLunar spirits raise rain and violent tempests around the circle to frighten the invoker. Showing this pentacle is said to stop them quickly; its pointing hand is enclosed by a declaration of trust and refusal of fear.
Pentacle · MoonA properly made pentacle carried on a journey is credited with protection from attacks by night and every danger by water. Its hand points towards Aub and Vevaphel, within an urgent prayer for deliverance.
Pentacle · MoonSophiel offers knowledge of the virtues of every herb and stone to whoever names him. This teaching claim accompanies protection of body and soul, a divine name from Exodus and a Latin petition against persecutors.
Pentacle · MoonAnswers in sleep open a more perilous lunar notice. Iachadiel is also linked with destruction and loss, night phantoms and the summoning of departed souls from Hades; a verse calls for enemies to scatter.
Pentacle · MoonA silver plate beneath water is said to bring heavy rain for as long as it remains submerged. The sixth Moon pentacle joins that unusual condition to eight radiating lunar characters and words from the biblical Flood.
Pentacle · VenusThe Venus family opens with command over spirits, especially the named company in this figure. Eight unlike characters radiate inside the angelic names, before the later pentacles turn to favour, honour and attraction.
Pentacle · Venus“Love is strong as death” runs around a lettered pentagram. The Venus notice speaks more broadly of grace, honour and fulfilling desires within the planet’s sphere; its verse imagines a seal upon heart and arm.
Pentacle · VenusShowing the third Venus pentacle is said to attract love. Its angel Monachiel has a stated Venusian timing, while two point-touching triangles hold names inside a verse of blessing and multiplication.
Pentacle · VenusThe fourth Venus pentacle claims power to compel the planet’s spirits and bring a chosen person at once. Its divided diamond is enclosed by Genesis’s words about bone and flesh, giving the command a distinctly bodily setting.
Pentacle · VenusA verse about a heart melting like wax surrounds this love-attraction figure. Its square carries special-script names, two of which Mathers left undeciphered; merely showing the pentacle is said to excite love.
Pentacle · MercuryA five-pointed star bears the letters of Yekahel and Agiel. The opening Mercury notice gives these spirits a broad setting: beneath the firmament, the heaven above the human world.
Pentacle · MercuryThese spirits are said to answer easily but appear only with difficulty. Their Mercury notice also gives them an unusually open remit: effects contrary to nature and outside the book’s other headings.
Pentacle · MercuryFour named angels enclose a wheel of eight varied Mercury characters. Its invocation also extends to the following pentacle, where spirit-command opens into hidden knowledge and the work of envoys.
Pentacle · MercuryMercury’s fourth pentacle promises understanding of created and hidden things and commands spirit envoys called Allatori. Around its central El, a twelve-pointed figure carries a strange request to fix the volatile and restrict the void.
Pentacle · Mercury“Lift up your heads, O ye gates” encircles the last Mercury pentacle. The notice claims command over Mercury’s spirits and entrance through doors however they are closed, with nothing able to resist.
Pentacle · MarsEight characters of Mars radiate within four angelic names. The opening figure summons spirits of this planetary nature, especially the company written around its circle.
Pentacle · MarsA healing claim appears among Mars’s figures of conflict. The Key says this pentacle succeeds against diseases when applied to the afflicted part; its star holds divine names and John’s words about life and light.
Pentacle · MarsWar, wrath, discord and hostility belong to the third Mars notice, alongside resistance to enemies and terror for rebellious spirits. A large Vau stands in its centre, among letters forming Eloah and Shaddai.
Pentacle · MarsVictory in war is the fourth Mars pentacle’s promise. AGLA occupies its centre, while Psalm 110 surrounds the cross with a Lord who strikes through kings in the day of wrath.
Pentacle · MarsA detailed scorpion fills the fifth Mars pentacle. The Key says demons cannot resist its sight, and surrounds the creature with HVL and a Psalm’s lion, adder and dragon underfoot.
Pentacle · MarsAn attacker’s weapons are said to turn against their owner, while the bearer of the sixth Mars pentacle escapes injury. Its angelic characters name divine protection; the Psalm around them sends a sword into the aggressor’s own heart.
Pentacle · MarsThe seventh Mars notice stages an immediate hailstorm: the figure is uncovered within the circle while its written demons are invoked. Its mixed scripts surround El and Yiai, and its Psalm remembers fire and shattered vines in Egypt.
Pentacle · JupiterParasiel, “Lord and Master of Treasures,” belongs to the company named around Jupiter’s opening wheel. The notice says this spirit teaches how to gain possession of the places where treasures lie.
Pentacle · JupiterGlory, honour, riches and tranquillity of mind are promised together in the second Jupiter notice. The same figure discovers treasure and drives its guardians away; a hexagram arranges divine names within a verse about wealth and lasting righteousness.
Pentacle · JupiterThe third Jupiter pentacle protects someone calling spirits and promises their immediate obedience when it is shown. Two smaller seals share a divided circle with divine names, surrounded by Mount Zion’s image of unshaken endurance.
Pentacle · JupiterRiches and honour are the promises of Mathers’s fourth Jupiter pentacle. A branching sigil, the angel Bariel and a silver engraving made under Jupiter in Cancer give this wealth-bearing design its particular character.
Pentacle · JupiterJupiter’s vision pentacle is credited with the ladder Jacob saw reaching heaven. Its lettered star, however, sits inside Ezekiel’s words about opened heavens beside the Chebar—a meeting of two biblical visions that Mathers tried to reconcile.
Pentacle · JupiterPsalm 22’s words about pierced hands and feet surround a promise of preservation from earthly danger. Four elemental rulers fill the cross, while the notice ties protection to daily devotion and repetition of the verse.
Pentacle · JupiterThe needy rise from the dunghill to sit with princes in Jupiter’s final verse. Its notice joins relief from poverty to the discovery of treasures and the expulsion of their guardian spirits, through devotion and repeated words.
Pentacle · SaturnSpirits kneel upon the earth when the first Saturn pentacle is shown, according to the Key. Four divine names fill its sixteen-cell square, inside a Psalm’s image of enemies licking the dust.
Pentacle · SaturnSaturn’s second pentacle meets adversity with a twenty-five-letter square and a promise to repress spirit pride. Mathers connects its Hebrew grid to the famous SATOR word puzzle and builds a numerical argument around the divine name IHVH.
Pentacle · SaturnMade within the magical circle and recommended for night invocation, Saturn’s third pentacle has a precise setting. Four angelic names enclose its wheel of magical characters.
Pentacle · SaturnRuin, destruction and death are the fourth Saturn pentacle’s principal purposes. A second use concerns news-bearing spirits invoked toward the south; divine unity runs along its triangle while a bodily curse encircles it.
Pentacle · SaturnNight invocation and the expulsion of treasure guardians meet in Saturn’s fifth pentacle. Divine names occupy its cross and diamond, surrounded by the words “a great God, a mighty, and a terrible.”
Pentacle · SaturnA hostile pronouncement accompanies Saturn’s sixth wheel. The Key says the person against whom it is pronounced will be afflicted by demons, while the outer petition calls for a wicked ruler over that person and Satan at their right hand.
Pentacle · SaturnNine orders of angels occupy Saturn’s last pentacle, whose notice gives them enough power to make the universe tremble. Its assigned effect is an earthquake; the enclosing Psalm shakes the earth and the foundations of hills.
PentacleLoops gather in pairs at the ends of this cross, turning with its four arms towards a single circular boundary.
PentacleShort cross-strokes mark an eight-armed wheel whose straight lines meet at one centre.
PentacleThree squared terminals give way to a triangle and a broad loop beneath the centre.
PentacleTiny rings crowd the cells of a circular grid, following its straight dividers into the narrow spaces at the rim.
PentacleThe cross’s side ornaments diverge: a figure-eight loop to the left, a longer chain of curves to the right.
PentacleFour large marks occupy a quartered circle, two of them shaped like an H.
PentacleA six-pointed star fills the centre, with curved and letter-like signs standing clear of its outline.
PentacleFive rings gather at the centre of a square whose corners curl into loops.
PentacleA downward-pointing triangle cuts through a rectangle, joining two geometric frames amid loops and character-like marks.
PentacleThe ends of this eight-spoked wheel carry an assortment of loops, bars and curves.
PentacleThree stems rise from a narrow base: a straight central stroke between two curling outer branches.
PentacleCurled caps follow the outer ends of an eight-armed wheel, with small gaps separating most from the straight spokes.
PentacleAn angular upper structure narrows into a long upright, which passes through a ring near the bottom of the seal.
PentacleNumbers punctuate an uneven grid, with several cells left open near the circular edge.
PentacleA small circle encloses the crossing of eight otherwise unadorned arms.
PentacleLong straight arms and shorter curled diagonals meet beneath a cup-like mark.
PentacleTwo sweeping curves cross a marked square and bend towards its right side.
PentacleA long wavy stroke stands beside a six-pointed star, accompanied by scattered letter-like signs.
PentacleSix arms meet at a common centre and end in different marks, from short cross-strokes to a rippled curve. The Greek text places this seal on a phylactery carried at the chest.
PentacleBroad brackets end the four arms of a cross, leaving a narrow margin inside its circular boundary.
PentacleThe descending arm bends into a wavy line, among five other arms with crossed bars, curves and forks.
PentacleTwo squares overlap around an open eight-sided centre; small loops mark the corners of the upright square.
PentacleWriting occupies one half of the circle while broad open spaces and nested curves fill the other.
PentacleHooked and crossed endings surround the centre of the last seal in Delatte’s twenty-four-drawing sequence.
PentacleHebrew word groups flank a descending column of characters. A small cross above the design links its two enclosing circles.
PentacleThree little rings sit above an elongated character and four below. Its joined strokes run across most of the inner circle.
PentacleA long angular figure crosses the upper part of this talisman. Several lines of Hebrew writing descend below it, with three little rings beside its right-hand upright.
PentacleA crescent-shaped cap tops a broad upright cross. Loop-ended bars close its sides and lower arm.
PentacleA ring-centred cross is surrounded by little circles and unlike terminal characters. Six small circles fill the space above its horizontal arm.
PentacleCurled and angular terminals mark a cross passing through a central ring. Stacked short bars sit on its upper arm, with a broad arch-like form below.
PentacleA short group of Hebrew characters begins four separate tiers of marks: paired strokes, four small rings and three more below them.
PentacleA long stepped character lies between two rings above and rows of rings and hooks below. Its left end curls into a loop.
PentacleEight arms extend from a small central ring. Squared, looped and hooked terminals give each part of the radial design a different ending.
Pentacle · MarsNine separate characters occupy a square grid beneath a Latin verse of dominion. The French notice places this pentacle under Mars and promises invulnerability to its wearer.
PentacleA bearded face looks outward from a halo of rays. The manuscript calls it the portrait of the Eternal and prescribes lion skin, solar timing and gold or yellow colour.
Follow a reference from the name or figure to its original words and image. A printed page, numbered notice, manuscript folio and plate number each point to a different part of the source.
A spirit’s title, office, legions and appearance answer different questions. Pentacles have another vocabulary, including names for their geometry and two kinds of numbering.
Begin with the books behind the stories, spirits and pentacles. The Greater Key and the Lesser Key share Solomon’s name, but organise his teaching in different ways.
The Solomonic books place written figures on a vessel’s cover, a conjuror’s breast and a prepared sheet or metal plate. Their names, verses and characters accompany accounts of making, consecrating, carrying and displaying them.
A photographed manuscript leaf and an edited plate show different things. Knowing who copied, translated or reconstructed a figure helps explain the form in which it reaches the reader.
