The mild rider and the unsteady ground
Under the power of the East, Agares appears as an old, fair man on a crocodile, carrying a goshawk upon his fist. The Goetia calls him mild in appearance. His offices are less placid: he brings runaways back and makes those who stand still run. [1]
He teaches languages immediately, destroys dignities both spiritual and temporal, and causes earthquakes. Dignities here are positions of honour or authority; the notice includes both religious and worldly standing. Agares was of the order of Virtues and governs thirty-one legions. His character is worn before the caller as a lamen. [1]
