The Knotted Desert Cabinet
Austrocylindropuntia subulata, monstrose form
Knobby cylindrical stems create Gumby’s irregular branching outline. Provide generous light, a draining container and a complete drying cycle for an established plant.

Give a well-lit position with sun or partial sun. When moving outside, increase exposure gradually rather than putting an indoor plant straight into midday sun. [1]
Look for firm new growth with the plant’s characteristic irregular outline. Thin, weak extensions warrant a gradual increase in light. [8]
Waterlogged roots may lose function. [15]
Appearance alone cannot determine watering need. [17]
Low light can elongate growth.
As indoor light falls, water less often and stop feeding inactive growth. Restart by checking the pot more frequently as warmth and bright-season growth return. [7]
Spines can be hidden among bumps and needle-shaped leaves. Keep branches away from faces and handle with tools. [1]
Keep detached pieces beyond children’s and animals’ reach. Treat this as an ornamental plant rather than food. [12]
Human poisoning (U.S.): 1-800-222-1222. Medical emergencies: 911. [13]
Pet poisoning: veterinarian; ASPCA 888-426-4435 (consultation fee). [14]
Gumby has cylindrical, tubercled stems with needle-like leaves. Flat-padded Opuntia and leafy Euphorbia can look equally sculptural but have different structures and handling concerns. [1]
