Bestiary of Cryptids & Legendary CreaturesIara is an alluring water woman whose beauty and promises draw watchers towards a dangerous world beneath the surface.
Also recorded as Mãe-d’Água, Uiara
A child points into the water. The woman below has golden hair, an ivory comb and a smile sweeter than his mother’s. He wants his mother to admire her too. Instead, she warns him to look away. [1]
Read the manuscriptIara’s invitation promises beauty where a watcher cannot breathe. The Brazilian literary water woman also appears as Mãe-d’Água, Mother of the Water. Gonçalves Dias gives her a voice in his poem A Mãe d’Água; José de Alencar lets a child believe she sees her in O Tronco do Ipê. These two nineteenth-century portrayals lead from an admired face towards sharply different encounters. [1][2][3]
Dias’s child tells his mother everything he sees. The woman’s long hair gleams like gold; she gathers a braid in her hands and combs it with ivory. Her bearing suggests a princess, yet she seems more timid than his sister. He thinks she smiles at him. His mother answers that other women have lost children who listened to this deceptive appearance. The smile is false, she says, and the water woman cannot be valued above the mother and sister he already has. [1]
For a moment, the warning works. The child, playing with his feet in the river, accepts that the figure is dangerous. He stirs the water to drive her away. When the disturbed surface hides her, regret replaces obedience. Surely his mother scolded him only because she did not want him to be happy. He peers into the water, afraid the beautiful visitor will never return. Tears begin while he waits. [1]
The current clears. The woman reappears with fish playing at her feet. A bright sash crosses her breast, its fringes shining with silver and rubies; a golden harp sounds beside her. She seems sorrowful too. The child apologizes for what he has done and promises not to repeat it. The harp vibrates, jewels throw light upon her wet feet, and fantastic beings appear at the openings of amber and coral grottoes. His mother still calls from farther away, but he bends closer. [1]
Now the woman speaks. She calls him a friend, assures him that she means no harm and offers a kingdom of crystal. There are palaces and treasures below; bright fish will replace the butterflies and moths of his garden. Thunder and storms cannot reach her spacious grotto. At evening her palace shines, enchanted maidens sing and the waters part as she passes. He may have it all. The child imagines the beautiful treasure already his and throws himself into the river. His mother cries out. Echoes answer, but no human voice tells her that he is there. [1]
Alice’s apparition receives a precise explanation from the narrator. A concave, crystal-covered rock reflects her upper body into the pool. Sunlight and wet green leaves give her fair hair a different colour. The water’s movement supplies the apparent gestures; fascination supplies the palace. Dias’s woman, by contrast, speaks within the poem and names possessions the child has not described. The reader is given different reasons to believe each image. [2][1]
The promise is tailored to its listener. Dias’s woman offers fish more brilliant than the garden’s insects and a grotto free from frightening weather. Alice hopes for help with a friendship that hurts her. Neither child seeks danger for its own sake. Each imagines the water answering a want that life on the bank has left unsatisfied. [1][2]
The Boqueirão belongs to Alencar’s fictional Paraíba Valley estate, a world of ownership, slavery and disputed family memory. Crosses stand near the ipê tree, supposedly marking people taken by the whirlpool, although their bodies have not always been recovered. Mário studies one cross with particular attention. Its base bears eleven small cuts, the latest apparently fresh that morning. He believes his father lies there. Benedito evades his questions, and the boy remains caught between affection for his companion and distrust of what adults tell him. [2][3]
Mário’s familiarity with the pool was painfully acquired. In the novel’s fourteenth chapter, he repeatedly explores the rocks and water, hoping to discover how his father died. Early attempts use a rope secured to the bank; practice teaches him the submerged roots and slopes. None of it solves the family mystery. It does give him knowledge that matters when Alice falls, although carrying another person turns a place he believes mastered into a danger he cannot overcome unaided. [2]
Dias published A Mãe d’Água in Últimos Cantos in 1851; Alencar’s O Tronco do Ipê appeared in 1871. [1][2]
Sandra Ramos Casemiro’s 2012 dissertation places both within a literary effort to give independent Brazil a distinctive cultural identity. Popular traditions supplied writers with material through which they could assert difference from Portugal and Europe. Their finished poems and novels also record particular decisions about plot, landscape and voice. [3]
The women do not offer the same kind of presence. Dias allows speech to cross the water: a mother’s warning competes with another voice that claims kindness. Alencar’s apparent invitation needs no second speaker. Alice reads movement as consent and beauty as goodwill. Both encounters have an alluring figure at their centre, but one ends where the other begins to demand sustained human action. [1][2]
Solange Morais and her coauthors distinguish four voices in Dias’s poem: child, mother, water woman and outside narrator. The admired visitor, the treacherous presence and the generous hostess emerge from different speakers. The child initially turns his mother’s warning into action, then begins to reinterpret her care as a wish to deny him pleasure. His return to the image gives the woman an audience ready for her promises. [4]
Alencar refuses to make courage identical with compassion. Mário saves a girl he resents, while imagining a victory over her father. Benedito supplies the support without which that victory would fail. Their brief embrace after the rescue interrupts the novel’s language of triumph with tenderness between the people left beside the rock. The human relationships are as unstable, and as consequential, as the face Alice thinks she sees. [2]
Casemiro emphasizes that the water woman belongs to the machinery of Alencar’s plot. The fall in the eighth chapter remains unresolved through intervening material before the narrative returns to Mário and the rescue. That delay lets the pool gather a family history around it. The apparent enchantment has drawn Alice into a place whose meaning extends beyond what she knows. [3]
Dias leaves no account of a recovered body or of the child’s life beneath the water. The absence is part of the ending: the kingdom described so richly never receives him in the reader’s sight. In Alencar, the imagined palace likewise disappears from the action. What remains is a child breathing, another sleeping under leaves, and a mother drawing her shawl over the son who came back. [1][2]
The encounters follow the Portuguese poem and the novel’s first part. The fourteenth chapter supplies Mário’s knowledge of the pool and his hesitation before the leap. [1][2]

Return to the Bestiary ↑Alencar’s Alice approaches a place forbidden by her father. The Boqueirão pool lies below a cabin, between steep rocks, with water lilies on its surface. Its darkest recess seems completely still. Alice has long wanted to see it. With the adults distracted, she slips away on the pretext of visiting her hen and follows a winding path down to a stone ledge. Leaning over its natural parapet, she looks especially for the Mother of the Water. [2]
At first she sees her own image. Then a woman appears farther away, her head turned in the opposite direction. Alice watches until the uncertain outline becomes a beautiful figure with green hair and blue eyes. The woman seems to nod to her. Alice thinks of the affection, stories and gifts she might receive, particularly a charm that would make Mário, her childhood companion, kinder to her. Voices call from above. She resists their interruption and grips the stone. Rock, water and plants become a jewelled palace in her imagination, with a throne shaped like a water lily. The welcoming arms draw her forward, and she falls. [2]
Mário has been watching from the rock above. The place carries another grief: his father disappeared in the pool, and he suspects that Alice’s father, the baron, had a part in the family’s misfortune. For an instant he imagines the baron suffering the loss that he himself has known. The sight of Alice vanishing breaks that cruel reverie. Horrified by his thought of revenge, he calls his father’s name and jumps into the whirlpool. [2]
He finds her below and takes her against his chest, but cannot bring her up. Her wet dress and his own clothes drag upon him; only one arm is free. He looks for a foothold against the rock and finds none. Breath and strength begin to fail. The narrator makes his persistence troubling: pride drives him to defeat the current, and he imagines forcing the baron to owe him gratitude. He grips Alice’s hair, rises briefly for air and dives again to regain her shoulder. When he next breaks the surface, he calls for Benedito. [2]
Benedito, an enslaved African man devoted to Mário, hears that the boy is still alive. Mário needs a rope or a pole, but neither is within reach. Benedito moves down the rock, holds the shrubs and stretches himself horizontally over the water. Mário first takes his hair for support. When that is insufficient, he braces his feet against Benedito’s neck and uses both hands to pull Alice. The pressure nearly chokes the older man, whose wounded body bears the strain. Finally the girl rises above the surface. Benedito frees one hand from the branches to take her while Mário climbs onto the rock. [2]
The baron carries Alice to the cabin. Left behind, the exhausted rescuers embrace; Mário kisses Benedito’s grey hair. Then crying comes from above: the people around Alice believe she is dead. Mário hurries after her. With Benedito’s help, he begins the revival measures described in the novel, drawing on procedures he has watched during other rescues. The room waits until he detects a response. Alice breathes again. As relief fills the cabin, he quietly leaves. [2]
Alice recovers her senses and looks for him. Benedito goes in search and finds the boy’s clothes spread in the sun. Mário sleeps beneath dry banana leaves, his head resting on an arm over a root. He had meant to go home, but cold and exhaustion stopped him. Benedito brings his mother to the place. She kisses his forehead, covers him with her shawl and gives thanks that her son is alive. [2]
