In Colenso’s account, missing travellers leave their families guessing: some are thought still at home, others away on long visits. Only when a travelling party arrives safely and questions are exchanged does the extent of the disappearances emerge. Suspecting hostile raiders, the people of Taupō gather an army. At Kapenga, wind carries their scent to Hotupuku’s cave. The huge creature approaches unseen until it is almost upon them. The men scatter, colliding in panic; some escape, while others are wounded and die. The survivors can finally name the danger. [6]
News reaches the Rotorua district, where 170 warriors assemble. They camp near Kapenga and begin by making ropes from cabbage-tree leaves. Round, flat and twisted cords become an elaborate snare. Chiefs advise caution, workers place the loops, and armed parties take their positions. A small group advances to lure Hotupuku out. They hear its tread rumbling inside the cave; when it emerges, they retreat through the ropes and over the low hills beyond them. The creature follows. Its head rises above a hillock, its forelegs enter the loops, and the watching men give the signal. The ropes tighten around its belly. [6]
Hotupuku lashes its tail as the constriction bites. The warriors strike with spears, clubs and digging implements. Men in front draw its head forward, then turn to attack; those holding the ropes secure them to posts and join the fight. Two parties alternate their blows at its head, one advancing while the other withdraws. The struggle continues until the creature lies still. By then it is night, and the warriors leave the body until morning. [6]
Daylight reveals the scale of what they have killed. They cut into it with stone blades, shark-toothed implements and shells. Inside are the bodies of men, women and children, some intact and others torn apart. Weapons, greenstone ornaments and many kinds of clothing lie with them. The conquerors bury the human remains, then cut up their enemy and render its fat for food. The predator is consumed by the people it threatened. Only after these acts do the warriors return to Rotorua.
