Vagrans egista
Lepidoptera / Nymphalidae
Vagrans egista is an orange-and-brown nymphalid with a finely patterned underside. Australian observations document spiny larvae, silver-marked pupae and eggs laid near host plants.
Read the species account
The Australian account describes orange upper wings with dark brown edges and scattered dark markings. The orange-brown underside carries curved rows of white, black, orange and grey spots. Reported wingspan is up to approximately six centimetres. [1]
Australian descriptions record green or brown larvae with a pale lateral line and branched black spines. The green pupa has projecting points and silver markings and hangs beneath a leaf. [1]
In Australia, larvae are recorded on Homalium circumpinnatum and Xylosma ovatum, both in Salicaceae. [1]
Australian observations record single eggs on nearby plants, dead twigs and debris close to a food plant. [1]
Young Australian larvae have been observed hanging from silk at night. The authors proposed that this position may reduce encounters with wandering predators. [1]
The dorsal surface has broad orange fields with dark margins. Curved rows of smaller marks give the underside a more intricate pattern. [1]
The illustration contrasts the broad orange upper fields with the intricate underside pattern. Bold contours preserve the silhouette, while smaller marks provide detail within the flat colour fields.
Handle the enclosure and keep it closed. Avoid direct sunlight, strong heat and persistent damp. Record any loose fragments or changes in the mount and seek advice before opening the frame. [4]
Are eggs always laid on the food plant? Australian observations record single eggs on nearby plants, twigs and debris as well as in the vicinity of larval hosts. [1]
