Hamadryas amphinome
Lepidoptera / Nymphalidae
The red cracker has blue-black upper wings and a reddish underside. Adults rest head-down on tree trunks and feed at fruit; field research has examined their high perches and the wing movements associated with cracker-butterfly clicks.
Read the species account
The upper wings are blue-black with a contrasting pale diagonal forewing band. The underside is reddish, producing a marked contrast between an open-wing view and the reverse. [2]
The North American account gives a tropical range from Mexico to Argentina, including Cuba. Northern observations include occasional strays beyond the main tropical distribution. [2]
Larvae occur in groups on their food plant, with Dalechampia recorded as a host. [2]
The larvae feed on Dalechampia leaves. Adults take juices from overripe and rotting fruit. [2]
A 1998 investigation of five Hamadryas species, including H. amphinome, proposed a percussive sound mechanism involving modified forewing veins. The authors attributed the clicks to rapid wing closure bringing these structures into contact. [3]
Across the five Hamadryas species observed in the Costa Rican and Panamanian study, resting butterflies tended to select bark backgrounds whose colour resembled their wings. [3]
The pale diagonal band stands out on the blue-black upper forewing. The reddish underside supplies a separate set of colours and markings. [2]
The illustration retains the pale forewing band, blue-black upper pattern and reddish reverse as distinct flat colour regions within bold outlines. [2]
Protect a physical specimen from direct light, damp conditions and handling. A closed enclosure also reduces exposure to dust and insect pests. [1]
How do the wing surfaces differ? The upper surface is blue-black with a pale diagonal forewing band; the reverse is reddish. [2]
How high does the red cracker perch? The Costa Rican field study recorded a mean estimated perch height of 5.4 m for this species. [3]
The species account documents feeding, wing surfaces and communal larvae. Monge-Nájera and colleagues’ 1998 study reports field observations of five Hamadryas species and their proposed sound mechanism. [2][3]
