Bestiary of Cryptids & Legendary CreaturesThe leshy is a Russian forest being who can mislead travellers, tend animals and appear as an uncanny human stranger.
Also recorded as Léshy, Lyeshy
The hunter’s dog begins barking, its hair raised. Ahead, a young-looking man sits on a log making a shoe, his hair entirely grey. In Ralston’s tale, the hunter has not yet spoken when the stranger answers what he is thinking. [1]
Read the manuscriptThe leshy is a forest being in Russian tradition, capable of misleading travellers and governing the animals around them. Collector and translator W. R. S. Ralston uses Léshy in a tale and Lyeshy in his survey; both spellings connect the name with the forest. His accounts range from a human-looking stranger to a giant who changes size with his surroundings. A person entering the woods may meet a keeper, a trickster or a captor. [1][2]
In Ralston’s The Léshy, a priest’s daughter goes into the forest without her parents’ permission and vanishes. Three years pass. A hunter from the same village continues his daily journeys among the trees with dog and gun. One day the dog’s furious barking draws his attention to the stranger on the log. The man is plaiting a bast shoe, a shoe woven from strips of bark fibre. As he works, he looks up at the moon and gestures threateningly at it. [1]
The hunter silently wonders how so young a man can have grey hair. The stranger replies that he is the devil’s grandfather. That answer tells the hunter what he faces. He fires into the leshy’s belly. The wounded figure groans and seems about to fall across the log, but rises and drags himself into the thicket. The dog runs after him; the hunter follows the dog. Their route ends at a fissure in a hill, with a hut inside it. [1]
On a bench within the hut lies the dead leshy. Beside him, a girl weeps over who will now give her food and drink. The hunter asks whose daughter she is. She cannot remember, as though she had never known her parents or the world outside. Her clothes have worn away during the three years of her confinement. What looks like the end of a dangerous encounter to the hunter is, for her, the loss of the only provision she can recall. [1]
He takes her out of the forest, cutting marks on the trees as they go. In the village he asks whether anyone has lost a girl. The priest recognizes his daughter; her mother hurries to meet the child she had given up hope of seeing again. The girl looks back without understanding. Recognition comes from the family first. Only gradually does she recover her senses. [1]
Her parents marry her to the hunter and reward him generously. Afterwards, people return to look for the dwelling where she lived. They wander for a long time, but never find it. The marks that seemed to secure a route have failed. The daughter is home, while the place that held her cannot be brought within reach again.
Ralston’s survey distinguishes regions and occupations rather than supplying one rule for every forest. In the province of Olonets, he reports that a herdsman must surrender a cow each summer or risk losing the entire herd. In Archangel, pleasing the leshy can secure the pasturing of village cattle. Under the imperial label “Little Russia,” he records protection of wolves instead. The same forest authority may therefore stand on very different sides of the boundary between the herd and its predators. [2]
Those place names belong to nineteenth-century imperial geography. “Little Russia” was a designation for Ukrainian lands, not a neutral present-day name. Ralston also assigns particular descriptions to the provinces of Kiev and Chernigov. Keeping his regional labels visible matters because his English book gathers accounts from different places under a broad Russian title; it does not establish a uniform belief shared by all Slavic communities. [2]
Hunters have their own exchanges with the forest keeper. Ralston describes salted bread or a pancake left on a stump, tobacco offered in Perm, and the first animal killed left in an oak forest in some districts. Success can depend on giving up part of the hunt, before the rest becomes the hunter’s to keep. [2]
The Songs of the Russian People, in its 1872 second edition, collects descriptions and brief accounts. Russian Folk-Tales followed in 1873 with the hunter’s story. Ralston identifies that tale’s source as Afanasyev’s collection, volume VII, number 33. His introduction ranks its priest’s daughter and hunter below the princesses and heroes of other tales. That hierarchy belongs to the collector. Within the story, the missing girl’s recovery is no less consequential for taking place in a village. [1][2]
Folklorist Andreas Johns describes another scale of mishap in his review of a reissued anonymous collection from 1861. A drunken tailor, misled in the woods, discovers that he has cut his own coat to pieces. The original collection’s anonymity had led some nineteenth-century critics to suspect forgery. Johns explains how the later editors used linguistic analysis to argue for its authenticity, while acknowledging that a compiler had edited the narratives. The tailor’s humiliation survives here through the reviewer’s brief summary. [4]
Ralston’s survey offers bodies that do not fit the shoemaker’s appearance. One figure wears an ungirdled sheepskin coat with its left flap over the right; others have horns, goat-like feet, claws or green, shaggy hair. A giant may rise above the trees and shrink below the grass outside them. In accounts assigned to Kiev and Chernigov, ashen forest giants differ from field beings whose height follows the grain: tall before harvest, no higher than stubble afterwards. [2]
Folklorist Jack Haney also emphasizes changing size and shape in his introduction to Russian wondertales. The variation makes recognition depend on more than a face. In the hunter’s tale, the young appearance and grey hair first provoke a question; the impossible answer, rather than horns or claws, identifies the stranger. [3][1]
The forest’s sounds can be equally deceptive. Ralston describes a leshy rocking among branches, laughing, clapping and imitating horses, cattle or dogs. A traveller who follows apparent company may find himself in a swamp or ravine, with the grinning being nearby. A forester drawn toward a child’s cries or dying groans risks a rushing stream where no stream was known before. Ordinary reasons to approach another creature become ways of losing the path. [2]
Landmarks can betray a traveller too: the leshy changes their appearance or takes the form of a familiar tree. It covers its own tracks with leaves, sand or snow. Ralston records a countermeasure for someone caught on its trail: reversing shoe linings or turning clothing inside out. An illness after a forest journey can likewise be explained as crossing its track. The sufferer returns with bread and salt wrapped in a clean cloth, leaves the offering and comes home believing the illness has stayed behind. [2]
A short Archangel account in the survey gives the forest a dispute over property. Two leshies defeat a third in a quarrel about rights, bind his hands and abandon him. A travelling merchant releases the captive. In gratitude, the leshy sends him home in a whirlwind and continues to help him. Elsewhere, violent wind and falling trees mark battles or wedding processions. A storm can thus carry a benefactor safely home in one account and wreck cottages in another. [2]
Animal movements acquire similarly social explanations. Ralston records an account of migrating squirrels in 1843: a leshy in Vyatka had supposedly gambled his squirrels away to one in Vologda, and the animals were travelling to their new owner. He also describes the bear as a servant guarding a drunken leshy against water spirits. These particular relationships make the forest resemble a place of ownership, rivalry and dependence, rather than a realm governed by one uniformly protective spirit. [2]
The survey’s forest families can reward care. In an account Ralston assigns to Ukrainian tradition, a woman finds a naked baby crying on the ground and wraps it in her cloak. Its mother, a Lisunka, arrives and gives her a pot of burning coals. Afterwards, the coals become gold ducats. No pursuit or recognition by force is needed: the woman responds to the exposed child, and the forest mother answers that kindness. Ralston compares the account with a German story, but the comparison does not turn the two into one telling. [2]
The hunter’s rescue has a harsher ambiguity. The leshy abducted the daughter, yet she mourns the provider lying dead beside her. Food and confinement occupy the same hut. Her parents’ welcome does not immediately restore what the lost years have taken from her: she cannot recognize the people who recognize her. The slow return of understanding gives the account a human cost beyond the shot that kills the forest being. [1]
Alexander Pushkin gives the leshy a quieter place in the prologue to Ruslan and Ludmila. A green oak and a storytelling cat open a landscape where the forest being wanders, unfamiliar tracks appear and a strange hut stands among marvels. The figure does not have to detain anyone or demand an offering. Its presence helps announce a world already filled with stories, before the poem’s principal journey begins. [5]
Ralston sometimes connects forest beings with weather and cloud mythology. That is his comparative explanation, distinct from a merchant’s whirlwind journey or a wedding procession reported in the same pages. The hunter’s tale leaves a more particular uncertainty. Someone has walked out of the hidden dwelling and marked the way, yet a later search cannot reproduce the journey. The forest yields a person while keeping the address. [2][1]
Ralston’s translated tale supplies the hunter and missing daughter; his survey preserves the separately attributed forest accounts. Haney places the being within wondertales, Johns discusses an 1861 collection, and Pushkin gives it a literary home. [1][2][3][4][5]
