The Domovoi has thrown the cat to the floor. The housewife calls it to account: the family needs that animal. In a story collected by W. R. S. Ralston, the unseen keeper of a home must answer to someone who knows how the place should be run. [1]
Read the manuscriptDomovoi and Domovoy transliterate the Russian Домовой, the name of a household spirit. In the accounts assembled by folklorist W. R. S. Ralston, it shares a family’s work, property and fortunes. Invitations address it as grandfather, neighbour or brother. Such familiarity allows affection and complaint: the unseen resident has a place in the home, but its conduct is everyone’s business. [1]
Ralston’s cat story begins with a Domovoi making trouble in its own house. One day it catches up the cat and flings her to the ground. The housewife rebukes it. She asks whether that is any way to manage a home, reminds it that they cannot do without the cat, and mocks its claim to be a competent manager. From then on, it leaves the cats alone. No one expels the resident or buys its goodwill. The woman makes it respect a creature whose presence matters to the family. [1]
A peasant’s difficulty with his horses proves harder to settle. Each Domovoi has a favourite colour, and the man keeps losing animals because they are the wrong hue. Almost ruined, he finally buys a miserable horse that satisfies the preference. The spirit welcomes this unimpressive acquisition with extravagant praise, declaring it far better than the others. From that moment, the peasant prospers. The joke depends on the gap between the horse’s appearance and the unseen judge’s enthusiasm; the losses that precede the happy purchase make its taste expensive. [1]
Neighbours’ spirits introduce another kind of trouble. Ralston describes them stealing hay and driving away poultry to benefit their own homes. They fight one another, and an intruder may defeat the established resident and take its place. The household then suffers pinching, pranks and sleepless nights. One prescribed response is to strike the walls and fences with brooms while ordering the stranger home. That evening the people put on their holiday clothes, go into the yard and invite their own grandfather spirit back to make the house habitable and tend the cattle. Eviction ends with a welcome. [1]
The stove joins the spirit’s indoor retreat to the animals outside. In one custom Ralston records, a newly purchased beast is led into its stall. Its owner bows toward each of the four corners and asks the household master to love, feed and water it. The leading cord is then fastened to the kitchen stove. Bringing an animal home means introducing it to more than its human owners. The request names the daily work on which its survival will depend. [1]
Moving the household requires a longer invitation. After all movable possessions have left the old home, the mother-in-law or oldest woman lights its last stove fire. At midday she gathers the embers into a clean jar and covers them with a white napkin. She opens the door, turns toward the stove and invites grandfather to the new home. At the new gates, the household’s heads meet her with bread and salt. She strikes the doorposts and asks whether the visitors are welcome. They bow and receive grandfather. [1]
The householder carries the bread and salt ahead of her into the cottage. She places the jar on the stove, removes the napkin and shakes it toward the four corners, then empties the embers into the stove’s niche. The jar is broken; its fragments are buried that night beneath the front corner. When families move too far to carry burning fuel, Ralston says a fire shovel and other hearth implements travel instead. The transfer keeps something of the former household’s work beside the new fire. [1]
More recent Perm accounts make the move less straightforward. Mariia Granova’s 2023 study cites Elena Byvaltseva of Severny Kommunar, recorded in 2019: an old poker may bring a Domovoi into a dwelling that already has one, provoking a fight. An account from Verkh-Yazva uses a box for the invitation. Anna Pavlovna Bychina’s Krasnovishersk account, also recorded in 2019, concerns a spirit forgotten during a move; a bag and an apology at the old property’s fence offer a way to fetch it. The objects travel with different expectations about who is coming along. [2]
Elvira Druzhinina, a researcher at the State Historical Museum of the South Urals, describes offerings of milk and bread near the stove or in the cellar. Her 2022 explanation places the household and its livestock under the spirit’s care, and stresses a courteous invitation when moving. Hospitality extends to a resident who may seldom be seen. [4]
A Domovoi may be felt before it is seen. Ralston describes a hairy hand passing over a sleeper’s face: softness and warmth promise good fortune, while a cold, bristly touch foretells trouble. Hair covers the whole body, even palms and soles, leaving only the area around the eyes and nose bare. Shaggy footprints can appear in snow. In another form it resembles the proprietor and may wear his clothes, giving the familiar householder an unsettling double. [1]
Ralston’s description from a district of Viatka is almost a miniature portrait: an old man the size of a five-year-old boy, with a wrinkled face, yellow-grey hair, a white beard and fiery eyes. His shirt is red and his girdle blue. Elsewhere a blue caftan replaces that shirt and a rose-coloured girdle completes the outfit. His grumbling, quarrels and forceful speech make him more than a small decorative figure. Druzhinina’s museum account adds the alternative appearance of a cat. [1][4]
The spirit’s vigilance can save the house. In Ralston’s accounts it wakes the householder when fire or robbery threatens, keeps hostile influences from the cattle, and shares the family’s grief. Before the householder’s death it may sigh, weep or sit at its work with its cap pulled over its eyes. Before war, fire or pestilence, household spirits leave the village to lament in the meadows. A private keeper briefly becomes part of a larger chorus of warning. [1]
Other warnings disturb the very property it protects. Horses are ridden to exhaustion, dogs dig holes and howl through the village, and knocking interrupts the house. Ralston also describes plaited manes, men’s beards and women’s hair as signs of its goodwill. The same intimate reach can braid a mane or leave a working animal spent. Neither the attention paid to a creature nor the touch of an unseen hand is reassuring in every account. [1]
Ralston’s Songs of the Russian People appeared in 1872. Its title promises songs, but the Domovoi discussion gathers prose tales, customs and comparisons. His preface describes the task as making Russian material accessible to people who could not read Russian, and acknowledges a large debt to collector Alexander Afanasief. The stories reach the English reader through this chain of selection and translation. Ralston was arranging other people’s records as well as reporting his own understanding of them. [1]
He connects the household spirit with the domestic fire and the continuing care of dead ancestors. That is his historical explanation, supported through comparisons across several peoples. His own regional details are more particular. In Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod, he says, favoured horses and cattle share the spirit’s own colour. An Orel custom instead tries to discover its preference by hanging a piece of Easter cake in the stable and later inspecting the colour of its maggots. The broad theory and the unsettling local test have different kinds of authority. [1]
Ralston’s separate Perm moving custom begins at night, with bread and salt, a candle before the icons and family prayer. The householder takes down the sacred pictures, opens the cellar door and invites the neighbourly spirit to accompany the family. A cock and hen enter the new dwelling first. Everyone waits for the cock to crow; silence foretells misfortune. After its call, the icons are installed, another invitation is made at the cellar and prayers precede lighting the fire and cooking. Food and premises give the relationship other forms. Tomsk households leave special cakes on Epiphany eve; elsewhere a pot of stewed grain awaits the midnight guest. Ralston also groups beings of baths, corn-drying buildings and stables around the domestic fire. His Bannik belongs to the bath and objects to late visitors. These working spaces have their own dangerous hours, extending the household’s unseen company beyond the room where supper is left. [1]
Parla Azarvash’s 2024 discussion asks how the spirit’s rules reinforce domestic and communal expectations. Drawing on earlier ethnographic publications, she considers cooperation alongside the policing of women’s behaviour. A keeper of order may protect a household while making that order oppressive for particular people. [3]
Set beside this interpretation, Ralston’s housewife offers a sharp contrast: here a woman can require the supernatural manager to change its conduct. [3][1]
Loyalty also looks different across the fence. Hay delivered to one household has been taken from another, and a guardian’s victory may leave its neighbour without protection. Ralston’s accounts give the spirit a family’s interests rather than an impartial concern for everyone. The intimacy is reciprocal but unequal: people feed and invite it, while its tastes can govern the animals they keep and its moods can disturb their sleep. [1]
Nikolai Zykov’s Household Spirit on the Whangdoodle gives the homebound figure a mount. Gamayun Museum dates the painted wooden composition to 2001 and explains that both figures contain whistles. The maker carved and sanded each part separately, then painted them in bright colours with simple geometric decoration. Its domestic spirit can be carried, sounded and played with. The museum connects Zykov’s imaginative toys with his interest in folklore, without presenting this rider as an old prescribed image. [5]
Druzhinina introduces the shaggy figure through Nafanya in the cartoons about Kuzya, using a recognizable modern character to approach household accounts. She also reports that stories and offerings persisted in city as well as village settings in 2022. Her short museum explanation gives the old resident a place among contemporary rooms and familiar entertainment. [4]
The sources do not always agree about what binds a spirit to a home. A family may carry its keeper away, leave it behind or bring it into conflict with an existing resident. Granova’s accounts keep those alternatives local, while Ralston’s travelling fire makes continuity tangible. At the new gate the woman with the jar asks whether the visitors are welcome. People, embers and an unseen grandfather have arrived together; the household must make room for all three. [2][1]
