Names & Creature Profile

Boto is a dolphin name; encantado identifies a being transformed by enchantment. Anthropologist Raymundo Heraldo Maués describes encantados as people who have become enchanted without dying, rather than spirits of the dead. They may appear as humans or animals. That distinction places the river visitor within a wider religious understanding of persons and transformations. [3]

The names used beside the river can differ from a visitor’s expectations. In the Mapuá study by Felipe de Oliveira Jacinto and Flávio Bezerra Barros, the pink river dolphin is locally called boto-branco, or white boto, and also botão, a name associated with its larger size. It is this animal that people describe becoming human. The smaller tucuxi is generally treated as less threatening. A female dolphin is called a bota. [4]

Tales & Encounters

The study identifies the canoe traveller as A. F. G., a 63-year-old man from Bom Jesus, recalling an encounter when he was about 27. He is on his way to gather açaí when he notices the white shape on the fallen tree. It is daylight, and the tide is ebbing. At first he thinks he sees a bird. As he rows closer, the figure turns toward him: a young woman, entirely dressed in white. He is about fifty metres away and wants to speak, but continues paddling. There is a splash. When he looks again, only the disturbance on the water remains. In telling it, he insists that the figure had a human body. [4]

Then a dolphin surfaces. He says he feels no fear. It accompanies the canoe to the açaí grove, blowing as it goes, and he speaks to it. He explains that he has only come to gather fruit and asks it to wait. After the work, he returns to his canoe; the dolphin rises again and follows beside him until he is near home. The journey has continued past the moment that seemed most extraordinary, becoming a trip made in company. [4]

At home he tells his uncle that a bota wanted to stay with him. His family laughs and suggests another identity: Iemanjá, the divinity associated with waters in Afro-Brazilian religion. He rejects their explanation and insists on the bota. The researchers’ transcription preserves the laughter along with his certainty. He invites his listeners to imagine having seen what he saw; they answer with a name of their own. [4][6]

The same speaker tells a more violent story about a family living upstream with three daughters. A visitor begins calling when their father is away. One daughter is becoming interested in him, but another is suspicious. When she refuses to let him through the door, he jumps into the water. She tells her father that she thinks the caller is a boto. The father leaves a gun behind when he next goes out.

Appearance & Signs

In the Mapuá accounts, both the male visitor and the female bota wear white. A more startling sign may lie at ground level: informants describe heels facing forward and toes pointing backward. Recognition requires attention to something that ordinary clothing does not reveal. That sign differs from the canoe traveller’s successive impressions, in which distance first conceals the human form and a splash then removes it from sight. [4]

Another Bom Jesus speaker, J. S., aged 40, remembers a story about his grandmother. She sees a man in white among her garden plants while her husband has gone hunting. An experienced woman from Ceará, familiar with powerful prayers, she recognizes danger and calls for help. The visitor runs, scattering some of her plants, and jumps into the water. J. S. identifies him as a boto trying to enter the house. The disordered garden remains behind after the apparently human intruder has gone. [4]

Nature & Powers

Not every encounter begins with a human appearance. While Jacinto and Barros interview M. M. S., a 65-year-old woman from Bom Jesus, her grandson bothers a small tucuxi lingering in front of the house. She becomes uneasy and warns that a dolphin can grow attached to a child. She considers the smaller animal less dangerous, yet does not welcome the game. A creature that appears to take an interest in someone can turn an ordinary moment on the veranda into a reason for vigilance. [4]

The same woman remembers dolphins following canoes when their occupants wore red. Her explanation remains open: perhaps the animals disliked the colour, or perhaps they found it beautiful. She also describes addressing an unwanted follower, telling it to continue its own journey and leave hers alone. Elsewhere in her account, attachment can lead someone beneath the water or bring pursuit at night. The uncertainty concerns the animal’s intention; the need to set a boundary is much firmer. [4]

Homeland & Tradition

Bom Jesus is one of the communities in the Mapuá Extractive Reserve on Marajó, in the Brazilian state of Pará. Jacinto and Barros describe a landscape worked through açaí gathering, farming, fishing and other uses of the forest and rivers. Açaí palms supply a familiar food and a reason to travel by canoe. The riverbank is also a place to sit, receive visitors and watch children. These activities bring people repeatedly into the places where the accounts unfold. [4]

The authors gathered these accounts during 55 days of fieldwork between April and September 2017. They interviewed 25 people and used initials, ages and communities to attribute most statements while protecting their identities. Their article, published in 2019, keeps a speaker’s remembered encounter beside observations made during an interview. Those are different moments of contact: the researchers can witness a grandmother warning a child without having witnessed the transformation she fears. [4]

Historical Record

In a 2020 Barcarena interview with Lucas Torigoe, Roberto Carlos Dias dos Anjos recalls his mother’s storytelling. He describes a white-clad, hat-wearing visitor at riverside festivities, then discusses the uses of the legend. Museu da Pessoa preserves the conversation, in which remembered tales and his later explanations remain distinct. [5]

Landscape & Associations

Maués describes the encante, an enchanted dwelling below the surface, often beneath rivers or lakes. Some accounts give it cities and warn that accepting its food can prevent a visitor’s return. The river surface can therefore separate places inhabited by different kinds of people. [3]

Variants & Kindred Beings

Maués found a different danger in his Salgado research. He reports no local version of the familiar children-of-the-Boto explanation in the material he collected there. Instead, the sexual encounter involved a dangerous loss of blood. His regional qualification matters: pregnancy and blood loss are different outcomes, not two stages of a universal story. [3]

Human and animal identities also meet in the Selkie stories, but the seal-person’s recovered skin gives a specific means of departure. Kelpie accounts make water dangerous through another form, the alluring horse. The Mapuá bota needs neither a stolen garment nor a rider on its back. Its companion continues paddling and returns home. These are comparisons of encounters, not names for the same being. [4]

Meaning & Belief

Dias dos Anjos interprets the pregnancy story through family pressure. Blaming a boto could spare a young woman and her mother a father’s anger, he explains, while giving the child a socially powerful identity. This is his interpretation of a remembered practice, rather than an explanation imposed on every telling. [5]

The Mapuá stories give attention an uncertain value. A child’s interest alarms his grandmother; a daughter’s interest divides a household; a canoe traveller accepts a companion. None of these relationships is settled merely by identifying the creature. The people respond through warning, resistance or conversation. A. F. G.’s untroubled journey is particularly striking beside the landing story told by the same man. His willingness to speak to the dolphin does not require him to consider every visitor harmless. [4]

Later Retellings & Reception

Luiz Eduardo Ricon’s 2017 MultiRio retelling offers the familiar party scene in miniature. A mysterious young man appears at riverside celebrations, wins a young woman’s affection and disappears, often leaving an unwanted pregnancy. [2]

Evidence & Open Questions

One material claim did receive laboratory testing. In 2008, Waleska Gravena and colleagues published an analysis of 43 preserved eyeballs bought as boto love charms in Belém, Manaus and Porto Velho. DNA testing identified 34 as the marine dolphin Sotalia guianensis, four as pig and one as sheep. Four yielded no amplified DNA and remained unidentified. None of the identified samples was Inia, the river-dolphin genus invoked by the label. The finding concerns these purchased objects, not every charm sold under the name. It demonstrates a mismatch between an advertised identity and animal material; it does not test the canoe encounter or a charm’s supposed power. [1]

Jacinto and Barros also heard about dolphin-eye charms, although they did not find anyone possessing one. Their accounts of transformations remain attributed testimony, with no collected biological specimen. What their research preserves in unusual detail is the act of telling: A. F. G. distinguishes his own journey from a neighbouring household’s story, recalls his words to the animal, and returns to the argument at home. The dolphin accompanies him only so far. The conversation travels farther. [4]
