Don Emilio Espadas’s guardian is called Pavel, after the researcher Pavel Alonso García Magdaleno. In testimony presented in García Magdaleno’s UNAM exhibition, Emilio describes introducing the alux to the land: the family shows it every corner that needs care. The helper watches over the place when they are absent, by day and by night. They in turn must feed it, remember it, speak to it and tell it what needs doing. Emilio compares this attention to caring for a child. The guardian becomes, in his words, another family within the family. [4]
Aldo Adame Pérez gives the caretaker a voice of his own in the modern story Aaj Beh. Its title character is an alux resting with his hat over his face when his dog wakes him. The dog tugs his shirt, then leads him through the woods to two people searching the vegetation and looking into the trees. Aaj Beh takes his gun and follows, eventually hiding to watch them. The visitors, Aruma and Kaknab, are looking for an alux. Kaknab expects a little figure dressed for work in the fields. Hearing the description, Aaj Beh looks himself over and fears that they are hunting him. [6]
A passing wind draws the dog away. Aaj Beh recognizes an animal of wind and follows it; his gunshot sends the two searchers after him again. They find disturbed earth and trampled vegetation, but no visible quarry. When they call out to the alux, the hidden caretaker is puzzled by the name. He knows himself as Aaj Beh, guardian of woods and fields. Aruma finally decides that someone who stays hidden should be left alone. She leaves, warning Kaknab, but he refuses to give up. [6]
Aaj Beh decides to frighten the remaining intruder away. He fires another shot to draw Kaknab closer, then sends the dog running through the undergrowth where it cannot be seen. He moves on the other side, so the searcher cannot tell which noise to follow. Together they circle him, approaching and retreating, while Aaj Beh knocks stones together. Kaknab’s curiosity gives way to fear. He backs away and calls for Aruma to wait. The alux and his dog laugh as he retreats. Another wind passes, and they take up their interrupted pursuit.
