Papilio xuthus
Lepidoptera / Papilionidae
Papilio xuthus is an East Asian swallowtail with cream-yellow wings, black markings and blue and orange hindwing accents. Its colour vision and the optical structures of its scales have made it a prominent species in butterfly sensory research.

Papilio xuthus belongs to the swallowtail family, Papilionidae. Asian Swallowtail and Japanese Yellow Swallowtail are widely used common names; Sinoprinceps xuthus is an alternative generic combination. [1]
Cream-yellow fields are divided by black markings across the forewings and tailed hindwings. Blue scales and orange marks accent the hindwing margins. The spring-form female illustrated in the 2015 optical study shows the pattern on both surfaces. [5]
An egg-laying experiment published in 2021 found positive correlations between eggs per leaf and the leaf’s height on the tree, flatness, green reflectance and brightness, and a negative correlation with the degree of reflected-light polarization. The authors interpreted these associations as evidence that females use multiple visual cues to choose leaves for egg laying. [4]
Behavioural experiments support tetrachromatic colour vision: four independent colour channels contribute to colour discrimination. The eye contains eight classes of spectral receptor, so the number of receptor classes differs from the number of independent colour channels. [6]
The 2015 wing study found that blue scales lacked pigment and produced colour through their microscopic structure. Pigments and scale structure together shaped the cream, orange and black regions. The authors examined how these optical properties correspond to the butterfly’s own visual sensitivity. [5]
Linnaeus described Papilio xuthus in 1767. The alternative combination Sinoprinceps xuthus retains the same species epithet. [1]
The dorsal view emphasizes the cream-yellow and black pattern; the ventral view reveals the corresponding colour fields beneath the wings. The tailed hindwing outline remains a prominent feature in both views.
Scott Schubr’s Luminary Oddities interpretation emphasizes the contrast between pale wing fields, dark veins and warm hindwing accents. The complete outline and marking arrangement identify the natural-history subject; edition titles describe the composition.
Keep framed specimens away from direct sunlight, damp conditions and abrupt environmental changes. Handle the enclosure, avoid contact with the insect and inspect for loose parts, moisture or pest activity. Follow the maker’s instructions for exterior cleaning. [7]
