Papilio polytes
Lepidoptera / Papilionidae
The common Mormon has several female wing patterns, including male-like and mimetic forms. Experiments link this female-limited variation to doublesex regulation and show how mimetic patterns can reduce attacks on butterfly replicas in field trials.
Read the species account
Papilio polytes, the common Mormon, belongs to Papilionidae. The Singapore account treats the local butterfly as the subspecies romulus and documents distinct female forms. [1]
Young larvae resemble bird droppings, while later larvae become green. Larvae possess an extensible osmeterium used in defence. [3]
The Singapore account records Citrus hosts, including lime. Adults visit flowers for nectar. [1]
In a large captive flight arena, all 22 observed male courtship events involved active females. Nonmimetic females made up approximately 23% of the available females but received half of the observed courtships. [4]
The mimetic female pattern is an example of Batesian mimicry: a palatable butterfly resembles a protected model. In field experiments, stationary paper replicas received few attacks and showed no clear difference between patterns. When spring-mounted replicas with mealworm bodies were used, birds attacked the mimetic pattern less often than the nonmimetic one. [5]
Dark wing fields, pale markings and red accents retain the documented pattern boundaries. The black body remains visually distinct from the wing markings. [1]
Avoid touching scaled wings or the fragile antennae. Keep a physical specimen enclosed, protected from direct light, moisture and insect pests. [7]
Can a female have a male-like pattern? Yes. Form cyrus is a nonmimetic female form whose wing pattern resembles that of the male. [1][6]
How does a mimetic common Mormon differ from a common rose? The common Mormon has a black abdomen; the common rose has a red body. [1]
The Singapore account documents local forms and hosts. Genetic studies examine doublesex regulation, the Ethology courtship study reports mate-selection behaviour, and field experiments test attacks on mimetic and nonmimetic replicas. [1][2][6][4][5]
