Names & Creature Profile

The Yeti’s familiar human outline takes different forms in Himalayan accounts. Expedition doctor Michael Ward recalls his Khumbu Sherpa companion Sen Tensing describing brown hair, a humanlike face and high forehead, distinguishing yak-eating and smaller man-eating kinds. Sen Tensing had not seen one himself. [2]

The English nickname Abominable Snowman has its own expedition history. In Mount Everest: The Reconnaissance, 1921, published the following year, expedition leader Charles Howard-Bury prints Metohkangmi beside that English expression. He attributes the identification to the porters travelling with him. His spelling and gloss belong to this particular English-language record; the passage does not give the porters’ individual names or their own extended accounts. [8]

Historical Record

The 1921 print appeared during an arduous reconnaissance of Everest. Howard-Bury’s party had spent days among snowfalls and sudden spells of warmth, climbing to acclimatize and waiting for opportunities to move higher. Near the 20,000-foot camp he found gentians, a small delphinium and white saxifrage; a hare and calling mountain birds also occupied the heights. His record contains living animals and tiny flowers before it introduces the footprint that would eclipse them in popular memory. [8]

On 22 September the climbers and twenty-six porters left at four in the morning. The porters travelled in four roped groups; the expeditioners roped together on reaching the glacier. Moonlight gave way to sunrise on Everest. Firm snow initially made the journey easier, but the ascent toward the pass brought softer, powdery ground. They could recognize hare and fox tracks. One impression, resembling a human foot, puzzled them. [8]

Howard-Bury says the porters identified the wild man of the snows. He favoured another explanation: a large grey wolf moving at a lope, its overlapping tracks making a humanlike shape in soft snow. He had seen a wolf near a lower camp earlier that month, but he did not report seeing an animal make this particular print. His proposal remained an interpretation of the trace. [8]

The party had a pass and a night’s shelter to reach. Howard-Bury arrived at the top at half past ten, took photographs in a wind that chilled his hands, and helped pitch small tents below the crest. Cooking had to wait for the wind to ease. After a wretched night, the party divided: selected climbers continued toward the North Col while Howard-Bury and others carried stores back to the lower camp. The snowman had occupied only a brief portion of a demanding journey. Returning to the wider world, he found newspaper accounts describing the habits of a creature the expedition was supposed to have met. His own account ends that encounter with a footprint, a disagreement and publicity.

Tales & Encounters

Thirty years later came the celebrated photographs. Ward’s 1999 recollection follows himself, Eric Shipton and Sen Tensing down the Menlung glacier in November 1951. Two trails appeared, one indistinct, one sharp. Shipton made four photographs, placing a boot or ice axe beside the clearest print: roughly boot-length, far broader, apparently toed. Without measuring equipment, they improvised. They followed the tracks, then camped by goats on a grassy moraine. Days later, Tom Bourdillon and W. H. Murray encountered weather-deformed tracks. Their maker remained unidentified. [2]

Appearance & Signs

Snow can offer a striking outline without preserving an exact foot. Howard-Bury’s explanation depended on two impressions overlapping in soft ground; the same expedition had moved across surfaces ranging from hard, crisp snow to exhausting powder. Recognizing that variation does not establish his wolf hypothesis. It explains why he considered the shape of the track together with the substance receiving it. [8]

Nature & Powers

Howard-Bury also records a tale in which a hairy mountain pursuer can be escaped by running downhill: its long hair falls into its eyes. The same comic reversal appears in H. B. Gurung’s Aspects of the Snowman. The threatening body supplies its own disadvantage. A child frightened by the creature is also given a picture of it stumbling helplessly after someone quicker on the slope. [8][3]

Homeland & Tradition

Tenzing Tashi Sherpa places the Yeti within an inhabited Khumbu landscape. His conservation book records the designated scalp at Samden Choling Gomba, on Khumjung’s north side. Khumjung and neighbouring Khunde share the monastery, whose life includes the study of Buddhist scriptures and annual religious gatherings. The object appears within this account of a community institution, rather than as an isolated trophy brought down from an empty mountain. [1]

Landscape & Associations

South of Khumjung and Khunde, Tenzing Tashi Sherpa describes sacred evergreen hills where incense plants grow. The area called Kyaksing is protected by local restrictions on cutting trees, gathering firewood and killing animals. Rules also govern grazing and the collection of grass and leaves. These are places known through use, obligation and restraint. The mountain horizon seen by an expedition and the hills cared for by villagers belong to the same region, but their histories need different guides. [1]

Later Retellings & Reception

Explorers sometimes answered public fascination with a joke. Historian Jo Woolf recounts George Mallory’s 1922 lecture to the Royal Scottish Geographical Society: when wild hairy men arose, he showed a photograph of his own party. Her essay also follows Edmund Hillary’s 1960 search through his later memoir. Purported remains yielded familiar animals: a scalp fashioned from serow and a skin identified as Tibetan blue bear. [7]

The prospect of bringing back a living creature raised a more comic problem. A Chicago newspaper wondered whether such a guest belonged in a zoo or the Hilton. The joke turns on the uncertainty already present in the name: an animal could be exhibited, but a person would require hospitality. Woolf preserves these episodes through a newspaper report and Hillary’s retrospective writing. Their humour makes the explorers participants in the story, capable of becoming its shaggy objects as readily as its investigators. [7]

Variants & Kindred Beings

The material gathered under the Yeti name has proved remarkably varied. In 2012, geneticist Bryan Sykes and colleagues invited submissions attributed to anomalous primates. They received fifty-seven samples, rejected obvious plant material and glass fibre, and selected thirty-seven hairs for testing. Thirty yielded recoverable DNA. Their 2014 table includes ordinary animals from several continents: a Nepalese submission was serow, while a Sumatran one was tapir. The test began with a proposed identity and asked what the hair itself could establish. [4]

Two Himalayan results attracted particular attention. Hair from Ladakh and Bhutan matched a short DNA sequence reported from an ancient polar bear. The Ladakh material was associated with a hunter’s account of an unusually behaving bear; the Bhutanese material was said to come from a bamboo nest at high altitude. Sykes and his co-authors considered an unfamiliar bear population, an unusual colour form or hybrid ancestry among the possibilities. They explicitly called for further evidence. The unexpected result was a question about bears, rather than the discovery of an unknown primate. [4]

Meaning & Belief

Gurung’s essay turns a sceptical eye on the visitors as well as the creature. A mountaineer carrying an ice axe and wearing crampons might look alarmingly equipped to local observers. He also mocks attempts to gather distant hairy beings into one roaming species. His argument resists both sensational certainty and the claim that unsuccessful searches settle every question. The expedition is itself part of the encounter: it arrives with equipment, expectations and an audience waiting for a story. [3]

For evolutionary geneticist Charlotte Lindqvist, the 2017 investigation offered another destination for that curiosity. In her Royal Society interview she explains the twin aims of identifying purported Yeti remains and understanding Himalayan bear history. Museum material and samples collected around a legend could reveal relationships among little-studied animals. She hoped the work would draw attention to their conservation. The question that brings a specimen to the laboratory need not be the only useful question it can answer. [6]

Evidence & Open Questions

The two scientific studies asked related questions with different collections and different amounts of genetic information. Sykes’s analysis used a short stretch of mitochondrial DNA, inherited through the maternal line. Its 104 DNA letters could distinguish many animals but offered less certainty among close bear relatives. In 2017, Tianying Lan and colleagues examined twenty-four samples, including known bear material collected in the field and purported Yeti remains from collections. Nine came through Reinhold Messner’s museum and the production company Icon Films; the entire set was not twenty-four alleged Yetis. [4][5]

Twenty-three samples belonged to known bear lineages; a tooth taken from a stuffed museum exhibit matched dog. The researchers obtained complete mitochondrial genomes for selected bears, giving them much more information than the earlier short sequence. Their Ladakh material grouped with Himalayan brown bears. It may have come from the same animal as the earlier submission, but the proposed connection relied on locality and anecdotal information from the collectors. The paper keeps that possible link qualified. [5]

The bear history was itself striking. The Himalayan brown-bear lineage branched off early from the other brown bears in the study, whereas Tibetan brown bears shared a more recent maternal ancestor with some North American and Eurasian populations. The researchers proposed long isolation for Himalayan brown bears and called for more samples and nuclear DNA to refine the history. A result can remove an extraordinary identification while revealing a substantial evolutionary story in the animal that remains. [5]

These analyses identify the materials tested. No documented chain connects their hairs, bone or tooth to the tracks photographed in 1951. That older trail survives through images and testimony; the submitted biological material allows a different kind of comparison. The most productive uncertainty is now specific: which animal made that track, where exactly did this sample originate, and what can the chosen genetic marker distinguish? Those questions can be pursued without forcing every monastery object, mountain tale and snow impression into a single answer.
