Again Thunderbird takes hold of Mimlos-Whale. Again the whale breaks free. Their struggle tears trees from the ground and shakes the mountains, but the hunter cannot finish it. In Luke Hobucket’s telling, the chase will end with a refuge for the prey. [9]

Jay Powell’s account on the Hoh Tribe’s website calls the being T’ist’ilal and describes it descending from Blue Glacier to the ocean for food. Its flight joins sea and mountain; the places where its burden falls become part of the country’s remembered history. [1]
In the account credited to Luke Hobucket in Albert B. Reagan’s 1917 paper, the hunt begins during a great flood. Thunderbird has the advantage of flight, but cannot defeat Mimlos-Whale in the water. It grips the whale with its talons and tries to carry him toward the nest in the mountains. The whale escapes. Each fresh capture starts another violent struggle. Wingbeats shake the mountains; trees are torn out by their roots. A succession of cleared places marks the opponents’ encounters. [9]
At last the whale reaches deep ocean, and Thunderbird gives up. Hobucket’s account connects that escape with the killer whale’s continuing life at sea and the prairies left on the Olympic Peninsula. The hunter has changed the land without securing its prey. Its reach is enormous, but the story gives the whale a place beyond it. [9]
An elk hunter sets out early in another account credited to Hobucket in the same 1917 publication. At Beaver Prairie he sees Thunderbird resting low in a tree and a dead whale it cannot carry farther. He takes a feather from the bird’s wing, bends it into his quiver and returns home. The feather is as long as a canoe paddle. After showing it to his neighbours, he sends word to the people at the river mouth: a whale is ready to be divided. [9]
People arrive in whaling canoes, three to six in a boat. They find the carcass where the hunter said it would be. Families measure off their portions, taking the head and other parts; by evening, blocks of blubber lie across the ground. They cook and eat some of the meat. It tastes good. The discovery appears to have become a meal shared among households. [9]
Then the sky darkens. Thunderbird returns to the prey that has been taken from it. Lightning and rain give way to hail larger than a fist. Everyone on the prairie is killed. After the storm, people, meat and blubber have become stone, forming a ridge of great blocks across the clearing. The account ends by pointing out the whale’s ribs and head among the rocks. The food that seemed available to all becomes a lasting record of the owner’s return.
The Quileute Tribe describes a homeland extending from Pacific beaches along rainforest rivers to the glaciers of Mount Olympus. Its public history places skilled ocean travel and sea-mammal hunting at the centre of that life. Red cedar canoes ranged from small craft to great freight vessels; whaling journeys reached far along the coast. A bird carrying a whale inland therefore crosses a world already known through human work, boats and journeys. [2]
Winter evenings brought dramatic tellings about ancestors and a time when animals were people. The Tribe distinguishes that storytelling from masked dances and songs belonging to families and passed down as their inheritance. A story heard in company and a family’s right to perform a song have different places in this account of community life. [2]
Albert B. Reagan printed the unsuccessful hunt in 1917 as part of a long footnote to an archaeological paper. Its heading credits Luke Hobucket. Nearby are a whale killed at Beaver Prairie and an elk hunter’s discovery that brings disaster to a whole gathering. Reagan’s introduction places his work among the Quileute and Hoh in 1905–1909. The publication date belongs to the written record, not to the age of the stories. [9]
The 1933 collection by Reagan and L. V. W. Walters also credits Hobucket for whale accounts and Frank Bennett for the mountain hunters. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network reproduces a selection from it. [3]
Powell’s June 2013 column names Bucket Mason’s telling to Reagan and recalls hearing Baker Kowoosh’s brief version on First Beach in 1968. [4]
In Frank Bennett’s account, hunters find a hole in a mountain and recognize Thunderbird’s home. As they approach, its inhabitant sends ice rolling from the entrance with a thunderous noise. The ice reaches a level, rocky place, breaks apart and rattles farther down the valley. Fear keeps people from sleeping nearby. The encounter gives the home a guarded threshold: the hunters hear and feel the consequences of coming closer without obtaining a careful view of the bird. [3]
Reagan’s short 1917 description makes weather an action of Thunderbird’s body: moving eyes produce lightning, beating wings create thunder and great winds. Movement within the home beneath the glacier also makes a rumbling noise. The distinction between a storm overhead and a sound under the ice is one of location, while the same powerful inhabitant accounts for both. [9]
Powell’s Hoh watershed account locates a whale rock below Braden Creek. A dropped whale that crashes to earth and dies becomes stone; a catch set down while the bird rests may instead lash its tail and flatten the trees. River rock and open prairie preserve different moments in the journey back from the sea. [1]
In his November 2014 Talking Raven column, Powell describes another whale rock through an account attributed to William Penn. It is a rounded river islet about thirty yards long. One explanation has Thunderbird rest its catch and become distracted; another has the whale struggle free of its grip. The whale’s thrashing clears the surrounding trees. Powell then brings the account forward into continuing land use: Quileute people kept prairie areas open by periodic burning. The remembered first clearing and the repeated human work of maintaining it occupy the same landscape. [5]
The whale does not always escape. The Beaver Prairie capture printed in 1917, and repeated in the later selection, ends with Thunderbird eating its opponent. The violent struggle uproots the trees, as it does in the unsuccessful hunt, but the shared landscape effect leads to opposite fates. Both tellings are credited to Hobucket. Variation appears within the named record, rather than only between distant communities. [9]
The 1917 flood account adds a different measure of duration: four days for the sea to rise and four for it to fall. Canoes drift without sun or land to guide them; the receding water leaves groups at Hoh, at Chemakum near Port Townsend, and back at their former home. Here Thunderbird’s anger explains a separation of people, while the whale conflicts explain changes in the ground beneath them. [9]
Hobucket’s hunter knows who brought the whale: his report names the bird and explains why it is resting. The invitation to divide the catch sets human hunger against another hunter’s possession. Its apparent abundance offers no protection. Every household’s carefully measured share joins the same ridge of stone. [9]
Public narration does not open every aspect of Quileute cultural life to visitors. The Tribe’s own guidance identifies spiritual teachings, sacred ceremonies and burial grounds as matters not openly shared. It also asks visitors to seek permission before photographing or recording people, events or activities. These are living decisions about what may be shared and by whom. [7]
The watershed appears in a different form in Claire Sianna Seaman’s painting Blue to Deep Blue, presented by Olympic National Park in 2023. Across two panels, glacier ice leads toward a forested river and the ocean. The artist assigns its blue and white layers to glacier extents in 1899, 2008 and 2018. Her subject is a changing watershed: the painting contains no Thunderbird. The park places it beside the association of the glacier with the bird’s home, bringing a contemporary concern about disappearing ice into view alongside that remembered place. [8]
In their 2005 study of Cascadia traditions, Ruth S. Ludwin and colleagues compare shaking and marine flooding with earthquake and tsunami effects. Their dating depends on particular historical accounts and other evidence; they explicitly find none of their Thunderbird-and-Whale stories datable. Japanese tsunami records and tree-ring evidence help establish the 1700 earthquake’s date. They do not give a calendar year to Hobucket’s battle. [6]
The researchers also identify the influence of storytellers, transcription and translation upon the surviving printed accounts. Reagan’s 1917 hunt labels the bird and whale as representatives of good and evil, but provides no original-language text through which to examine those terms. The narrated outcome is less tidy than the opposition: the adversary labelled evil survives, and the hunter labelled good abandons its pursuit. That unresolved escape remains part of the story’s force. [9][6]
Reagan’s 1917 paper supplies the unsuccessful hunt, stone-making storm and early flood account. The later selection preserves Bennett’s hunters. Powell’s public accounts connect the bird with named places and remembered tellers. Tribal pages explain community life and visitor boundaries. Return to the Bestiary ↑In Powell’s June 2013 retelling, the shape-changing K’wati repeatedly rescues his wife from an elder Thunderbird, which keeps taking her away. Finally he overturns a canoe, transforms it into a whale and hides beneath it. The bird grips the whale but cannot lift it or release its talons. K’wati sends the whale diving into deep water, drowning his adversary, then returns to his wife. The elder bird’s son grows larger than his father and becomes the Thunderbird beneath Blue Glacier. Powell also relays Hal George’s account of Harold Johnson’s flood telling: Thunderbird’s angry wingbeats send waves inland. Canoes drift apart; some people remain at Chimacum after the waters fall, while others return to La Push and Lower Hoh. The hungry bird then carries a whale to Mount Olympus. Powell distinguishes another flood telling that supplies no cause. [4]
