A white dome stands inland on the island where Sindbad has been abandoned. It has no door, and its smooth sides defeat his attempts to climb it. Then a wing passes across the sun. The stranded traveller has found an egg—and the arrival of its parent gives him an extraordinary idea. [1][2][4]

The creature has the outline of a bird on a scale that makes a person almost disappear: its leg resembles a tree trunk, its wing interrupts daylight, and its egg can be mistaken for a building. For the seafarers in Sindbad’s adventures, recognising those proportions can determine whether they survive their landing. [1][2][4]
Polo’s account raises and then challenges a comparison with the gryphon. The people describing the creature insist that it resembles an eagle, without the lion half familiar from stories and pictures. Polo is uncertain whether gryphon is the right name, but preserves that bodily distinction. The griffin and roc share a place among marvellous winged beings without becoming interchangeable creatures. [4]
In the second voyage, Sindbad discovers that his ship has left him behind and climbs a tree to survey the island. A distant white object draws him inland. Close up, it is smooth and enormous, without an opening or a surface he can climb. A passing wing darkens the sky, and he recognises it as a roc’s egg. When the bird settles, he binds himself to its leg with his turban cloth. At dawn it lifts him beyond sight of the earth, then descends into a steep-sided valley. He unties himself before the bird takes a huge serpent and flies away. Diamonds cover the ground, but cliffs prevent escape and snakes make the night dreadful. Leaving the island has exchanged one enclosure for another. [1]
Falling pieces of meat reveal the merchants’ method of gathering diamonds: eagles carry jewel-studded meat to nests that the people can reach. Sindbad gathers stones, ties himself beneath a large piece and is lifted to a nest. A merchant first accuses him of taking the goods, then hears his story and accepts one diamond. He leaves with the traders and eventually returns to Baghdad. The text names these rescuing birds eagles, preserving a different creature’s role after the roc’s accidental transport. [1]
The fifth voyage turns another encounter with an egg into a disaster. Sindbad recognises it and warns his companions, but they break it and consume the young. The parents appear at first like distant clouds, then approach noisily. The people hurry back to their ship. The birds briefly disappear, then return carrying rocks. The steersman turns the vessel clear of the first falling stone, but the second bird’s aim destroys it. Sindbad survives on wreckage. His earlier experience has made him the person who knows what the company has found. It cannot make his companions listen. [2]
The two voyages give knowledge opposite fortunes. Recognising the egg allows Sindbad to improvise a way off the first island, yet recognising another egg does not persuade his companions to leave it alone. One danger permits an individual decision; the other depends on a group whose members will not listen. Ingenuity works only where the person who understands the danger can also change the action that exposes them to it. [1][2]
The merchant at the eagle’s nest first sees Sindbad as a thief. Once he hears the explanation, he accepts only one diamond, though Sindbad offers more. Beside the fifth voyage’s destructive appetite, that restraint matters: a man satisfied with enough helps bring the first adventure safely to an end. [1][2]
The islands and sea passages of Sindbad’s voyages form a literary maritime geography: distant landfalls offer food, trade, treasure and dangers that the traveller cannot anticipate. Baghdad is the place to which he returns. The repeated movement out and home allows the extraordinary encounter to enter a familiar social world, where a survivor can tell what happened and display the wealth he brought back. [1][2]
Polo places his Ruc reports in the Indian Ocean, beyond the islands that merchants normally visit. In his chapter on Madeigascar, people who say they have travelled farther south describe the bird. The later editor Henry Yule questions that chapter’s geography, seeing information about different places gathered under one island name. The name points toward Madagascar, but the account cannot simply be read as a description of one island or of what all its communities believed. [4]
The Sindbad episodes here follow E. Dixon’s English selection, illustrated by John D. Batten and published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons. Its editorial note identifies Galland, 1821, as the text being abridged and edited. That date belongs to the stated source of the selection; the digitised New York Public Library copy is tentatively catalogued around 1915. Distinguishing the two avoids giving an uncertain printing a false exact date. [3][7]
The giant bird in the Yule-Cordier edition of Polo appears in Book III, chapter XXXIII. Polo reports what others tell him, rather than describing a hunt he watched. Their Ruc seizes an elephant, carries it high and drops it; the fall kills the animal, which the bird then eats. The account also says that the Great Kaan sent an envoy to investigate and secure the release of an earlier messenger detained there. Both returned with wonders to report. A huge feather supposedly sent to the ruler enters the account as something Polo has heard about. The journey of the information is part of the story. [4]
Scale emerges through objects a traveller can recognise. Sindbad’s egg looks like a dome; the leg beside it has the thickness of a tree trunk. In Polo, the reported wings extend thirty paces and the quills measure twelve. These are the account’s enormous estimates, not modern measurements. Rather than giving a stable plumage pattern, the descriptions make the bird visible through what it overshadows, encloses or can lift. [1][4]
In the second voyage, the valley’s giant serpents fear the roc and hide in their dens during the day. They emerge at night, when Sindbad blocks a cave entrance against them. What terrifies the traveller is prey to something larger. The bird’s hunting also gives the valley a rhythm: the same darkness that removes one predator brings others out of shelter. [1]
The fifth voyage gives the birds a parental motive. Their attack follows the destruction of the egg and its young, rather than the mere arrival of a ship. The companions have treated an apparently helpless object as food; the returning parents turn that meal into a catastrophe. [2]
Islands, high valleys, cliffs, and open sea create the roc’s narrative habitat. Human routes stop where the bird’s route continues. Its flight crosses the barrier that traps Sindbad, yet deposits him beyond another barrier. Height therefore does more than display grandeur: it repeatedly rearranges access. A place can be visible, desirable, and full of treasure while remaining almost impossible for a person to enter or leave. The creature joins that landscape to the sky without making it hospitable. [1]
Dangerous currents perform a similar work in Polo’s account of the southern seas. A ship may reach a place quickly and take months to return; farther south, the water is said to prevent a return altogether. Such barriers make distant reports difficult to test within the account’s own geography. The Ruc inhabits the part of the world from which information, like a traveller, has trouble getting back. [4]
The Sindbad bird belongs to an adventure told by its protagonist; Polo’s Ruc reaches him as information about distant regions. James R. McClymont’s 1920 essay proposes a connection with Persian bird lore and the Simurgh, while looking for eagle-like observations behind the marvellous report. These are that writer’s historical proposals. Similar size or a shared name in a comparison does not, by itself, establish the route by which one account became another. [1][4][5]
Elephant birds provide a different kind of comparison. The Natural History Museum describes them among the large birds of Madagascar’s past, with exceptional eggs and substantial remains. They were flightless. Their existence demonstrates that extraordinary animal size can have material evidence, but it does not verify an eagle-like flyer carrying elephants or dropping rocks on ships. The useful comparison lies in the difference between measured remains and the actions assigned to a creature in a story. [6][8]
Dixon’s illustrated selection preserves this change of birds in its picture titles: the eagle’s nest and the ship pursued by rocs belong to separate images. Batten’s illustrations accompany an abridged English reading of the voyage cycle, whose editorial note makes the act of selection visible. The enormous bird is only one part of Sindbad’s encounters, even when its shadow dominates a scene. [3][1][2]
A later investigation brought an unexpectedly ordinary material into the roc’s history. In a note reproduced in the Yule-Cordier volume, Yule describes wondering whether a supposed giant quill could be a plant. James Sibree suggested the long midribs of rofia palm leaves. John Kirk then sent four palm fronds from Zanzibar to the India Office; the largest surviving midrib measured twenty-five feet four inches. Stripped of leaflets, such a pole could resemble an immense feather shaft. [4]
Kirk’s accompanying letter describes practical uses for the same material: ladders, doors and stages for gathering cloves. Yule’s comparison brought an object of trade and everyday work beside a traveller’s marvel. It did not recover the feather supposedly presented to the Great Kaan. McClymont’s later essay pursued another explanation, combining marvellous tradition with possible observations of an eagle-like bird. The palm and the eagle were proposals about how a report might grow, rather than discoveries of a flying elephant-catcher. [4][5]
Tracing the roc across languages requires more than setting similar giant birds beside one another. Dixon’s selection identifies its own editorial route, but cannot represent every Arabic witness or every translation of the voyages. Polo’s account and the much later annotations likewise speak from different periods. A resemblance noticed by Yule or McClymont may be worth investigating without becoming something Polo himself knew. [3][4][5]
The surviving accounts nevertheless make the roc vividly independent of the people below it. A traveller can hitch himself to its leg, or provoke it into following his ship. Once the wings open, he does not control the journey. Even a valley carpeted with diamonds can leave him looking up at a departing bird, searching for another way home. [1][2]
The two Sindbad voyages come from the same edited collection. Polo’s travel narrative is printed with later commentary, including the palm-frond inquiry; those voices are distinguished above. The museum account concerns actual giant birds and their remains, rather than establishing an origin for the roc. [1][2][3][4][6][8]
