Names & Creature Profile

Mothman is the winged, red-eyed figure associated with Point Pleasant. Its reports include a night-time pursuit and a daylight encounter with a bill-bearing shape. The latter description comes from Tom Ury, whose journey differs from the image that became familiar. [1][4]

Tales & Encounters

The Register’s front page of 16 November 1966 names two couples, the Scarberrys and the Mallettes, who had been near the old power plant late the previous night. They described a tall winged figure with red eyes. Roger Scarberry drove away; it appeared to follow. Gwen Mallow’s later Smithsonian account supplies further details of the pursuit: the figure rose into the air and kept pace as the frightened driver accelerated toward town. Officers searched the area afterward without finding it. [9][5]

The next reports brought a different sort of traffic. Ralph Turner’s Herald-Dispatch article of 22 November describes hundreds of people searching at night. Four teenagers said a red-eyed bird had flown away from their car early on Sunday. Wildlife manager Duane Pursley doubted that a large bird could remain hidden after hunters had disturbed the area. Authorities presumed it had gone, or would soon be frightened away. The searchers left an easier trail to follow: litter accumulated and signs were damaged. An absent creature had brought a very tangible crowd into the wildlife grounds. [3]

A Register clipping dated 25 November gives Tom Ury a daylight journey. Driving north on Route 62 at about 7:15 in the morning, he saw a flying object come out of woods on his right. It circled above his convertible. He accelerated to about seventy miles an hour and said that it kept up. Because it stayed aloft, he began to think it would not attack through the roof. Near Kirkland Memorial Gardens, the object left him, crossed a field and flew toward the river. He described a grayish-brown figure with a bill, and explicitly said he had not seen red eyes. [4]

Historical Record

These newspaper accounts were appearing within days of one another. Between the first couples’ report and Ury’s, the subject had acquired a proposed identification, a night-time search and public complaints about the searchers. The sequence is unusually close to the beginning of a now-famous legend. A reader can see people deciding what to call the figure while others are already acting on the reports. The question of whether something remains nearby is immediate, rather than a mystery reconstructed decades afterward. [9][2][3]

Gordon Simmons’s West Virginia Encyclopedia account counts twenty-six reports in the year beginning in November 1966. Alongside the encounters came rumors of failing phones, radios, televisions and cars, UFOs and mysterious visitors. New York paranormal writer John Keel gathered the material. [1]

Homeland & Tradition

The initials TNT preserve the landscape’s wartime purpose. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) records production of the explosive at the West Virginia Ordnance site from 1942 to 1945. After operations ceased, industrial land passed to the state for wildlife management. The McClintic area therefore joined the remnants of manufacturing with a new use for the land. The setting of the 1966 searches was neither untouched forest nor an imaginary wasteland. [8]

EPA’s 1987 history adds an important distinction: the works manufactured TNT for shipment elsewhere; it did not load munitions or test ordnance. Before the government acquired the property in 1942, about half of it had been cropland; forest, pasture and roughly thirty farm residences occupied the rest. The National Guard’s Camp Conley was included in the acquisition. Wildlife management subsequently encouraged wetlands and waterfowl, with more than thirty shallow ponds constructed after military production ended. The same historical report describes fishing and hunting there. Those successive uses help explain why old industrial structures and the possibility of a large bird could occupy the same news story. [10]

Appearance & Signs

Turner’s 19 November article offered a known animal for the reported gray wings and striking red eyes. Wildlife biologist Robert L. Smith suggested a sandhill crane, with headlights making the red areas around its eyes conspicuous. The proposal belonged to the first week of reporting, not a later attempt to dismantle a fully formed legend. It gave worried residents something ordinary to look for, although no captured bird settled the encounters. [2]

The folio concentrates the legend’s familiar features into a dark, shaggy figure above a wooded river. Its broad wings and bright eyes establish a nocturnal presence; its dangling hands make the human resemblance explicit. This is the collection’s existing modern interpretation. The bill in Ury’s daylight description has no equivalent in that selected silhouette. [4][1]

Nature & Powers

Flight changes the practical choices inside the reports. The couples leave by car, only to describe continued pursuit. Ury first accelerates, then judges the object less threatening because of where it stays. Neither account gives the figure speech or an announced purpose. Its intention is something the witnesses infer while trying to reach safety. The car’s speed and the convertible’s roof become parts of that judgment, just as wings and eyes become parts of the description. [9][4]

Variants & Kindred Beings

A later hypothesis exchanged the crane for an owl. In Asher Elbein’s 2018 Audubon reporting, investigator Joe Nickell considers the barred owl particularly plausible. Elbein reports that refuge officials confirmed a local barred-owl population; Nickell points to the bird’s crimson eyeshine. The combination of a rounded head, reflected light and silent flight could account for features that frightened motorists. Elbein’s interviews also distinguish owl species. A barn owl’s eyeshine is weak, whereas the barred owl’s can shine crimson. Abandoned buildings offer a possible setting for either an unexpected bird or an alarming encounter with one. These remain proposed explanations of historical observations; the article presents no animal recovered from the original encounters. [6]

Elbein also describes a 2010 television exercise in which volunteers saw roadside cutouts fitted with bicycle reflectors for eyes. They misjudged the figures’ size. The demonstration asks how darkness and reflected light can distort an estimate, but it does not recreate the witnesses’ exact positions, attention or surroundings. A crane’s red facial patches and an owl’s eyeshine are different mechanisms. Choosing between them requires more than matching a modern portrait of Mothman. [6][2]

Landscape & Associations

The original search carried hazards of its own. Turner recorded warnings against shooting migratory birds and entering the abandoned powerhouse after dark. The proposed identification therefore had a practical consequence: a search for a monster might become a search with guns for an ordinary bird. The officers’ warnings belonged to the unfolding event, alongside the witness descriptions and the wildlife manager’s efforts to assess what might still be there. [2]

The physical setting also changed after the sightings. West Virginia’s 2006 groundwater report records red wastewater seeping near Pond 13 in 1981, leading to investigations of contamination left by TNT production. Buried wastewater lines still contained crystalline explosive. Cleanup included removing contaminated lines and disposing of asbestos. The report dates demolition of the north and south powerhouses, and filling of open pits and manholes, to January 1995. It also records replacement wetlands after cleanup damaged the habitat. The powerhouses associated with the original reports did not survive intact: the landscape itself has a history of demolition, rebuilding and habitat repair. [11]

Later Retellings & Reception

Keel’s The Mothman Prophecies appeared in 1975, connecting the strange events with the Silver Bridge disaster of December 1967. The 2002 film starred Richard Gere. This prophecy narrative looks backward from catastrophe: an earlier appearance becomes a warning when the story is told in light of what happened afterward. [1]

Evidence & Open Questions

The bridge investigation followed a different chain of events. At about five in the evening on 15 December 1967, the Silver Bridge between Point Pleasant and Kanauga, Ohio, collapsed, killing forty-six people and injuring nine. The National Transportation Safety Board traced the failure to eyebar 330 in the suspension chain on the Ohio side. A critical flaw had developed through stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue. Fracture severed the bar’s connection; the chain lost its continuity, and collapse progressed toward the West Virginia shore. [7]

The NTSB found that the hidden flaw could not have been detected by the inspection methods available to the investigation without disassembling the joint. That qualification matters: an unseen structural defect is not an unexplained disaster. The report gives the failure a material cause and a sequence. It neither identifies the objects reported on nearby roads nor requires their identification to explain why the bridge fell. [7]

Meaning & Belief

Turner’s November follow-up had already wondered whether the mystery would become a tourist attraction. Decades later, Mallow found a town making that possibility its own. Point Pleasant resident Jeff Wamsley had grown up with the accounts; his father worked at the National Guard Armory. He opened his museum in 2006 to show the archival material he had gathered, including police reports and witness accounts. Mallow’s 2021 article describes that museum, Bob Roach’s public sculpture, a festival, merchandise and café treats. Folklorist Rosemary Hathaway connects local storytelling with an identity beyond the mining and industrial stereotypes outsiders bring to West Virginia. Wamsley emphasizes visitors’ wish to investigate and decide for themselves. The town can welcome their curiosity without settling what the witnesses saw. A place people once sped away from has become somewhere they deliberately travel to meet a story. [3][5]

Sources & Manuscript Notes

The four 1966 clippings anchor the encounters and immediate response. Simmons follows the legend’s chronology; Mallow reports its community life; Elbein examines owl explanations. EPA and West Virginia’s environmental records establish the changing setting. The NTSB summary supplies the bridge investigation’s findings. [9][2][3][4][1][5][6][8][10][11][7]
