Manticore

Names & Creature Profile

Manticore, Mantichora, Martichoras and Martikhoras are spellings attached to this human-faced predator. Classicist Andrew Nichols traces the name to Persian elements meaning man and eating. He suggests that Ctesias received it from a Persian informant or through an interpreter. A name can carry the language of an intermediary even when the animal is said to come from somewhere else. The surviving Greek account calls the creature a man-eater: its appetite supplies its identity. [6][4]

Appearance & Signs

In the account preserved by Photius, a later Greek compiler, the manticore is as large as a lion and red as cinnabar. Its face, ears and pale blue eyes resemble a person’s. The mouth breaks that resemblance open: three rows of teeth occupy it. A land scorpion supplies the comparison for the tail, whose terminal sting is longer than a cubit, roughly the distance from elbow to fingertip. Further stings line its sides. The description assembles familiar parts, but gives their owner several ways to attack at once. [4]

Nature & Powers

Distance offers no simple escape. When attacked from a distance, the creature raises its tail and launches stings as though shooting a bow. When the attack comes from behind, it straightens the tail and fires backward. Photius’s summary gives that backward shot a reach of a hundred feet. Each missile is about a foot long and as slender as a small rush. A successful hit kills any animal except an elephant. The tail is therefore both a close weapon and a means of reaching an enemy that has kept clear of the claws. [4]

The supply does not run out: new stings replace those already discharged. People hunt the creatures from elephants, using spears or arrows. The exception in the description becomes the means of resistance. Hunters need a mount that can survive the missile, and weapons that reach beyond their own hands. The account calls the creatures numerous in India and gives human beings a grim distinction among their prey: they kill and eat more people than other animals. Hunting a man-eater means entering the reach of something already hunting people. [4]

Tales & Encounters

Aelian’s On Animals gives the creature a claimed appearance before royalty: Ctesias says he saw it in Persia after it was brought from India as a present for the king. Aelian immediately questions the earlier author’s authority. The reported gift supplies a witness, but its telling also supplies a reason to hesitate. [3]

Philostratus gives the manticore a different kind of encounter in his Life of Apollonius of Tyana. The travelling Greek teacher Apollonius asks the Indian sage Iarchas whether such an animal lives there. Iarchas first asks what he has heard about its shape. Apollonius describes the four-footed, human-headed beast and its arrowlike tail hairs, adding that he cannot believe the stories. He is bringing a question, not reporting a sighting. The conversation then widens to golden springs, a magnetic stone, people living underground, pygmies and people said to shade themselves with a foot. [5]

Iarchas answers by directing the traveller back to what he has seen on his journey. Apollonius is now capable of describing those things himself. As for an animal that shoots arrows or a spring of golden water, Iarchas has never heard of either in the country. Philostratus introduces the exchange by commending a position between believing everything and disbelieving everything. His literary scene allows a marvellous description to be spoken in full and then refused by the person asked to confirm it. The visitor’s store of stories does not oblige his host to recognize their contents. [5]

Homeland & Tradition

India is the creature’s home in Photius’s summary; Persia is the place of the reported royal presentation in Aelian. Pliny’s Natural History gives it another location, Æthiopia, in Philemon Holland’s 1601 English translation. These are places assigned by particular writers, not interchangeable names for one country. The movement from a claimed Indian animal to a Persian gift and a Roman catalogue also changes who is speaking: informants, an alleged observer and authors repeating earlier testimony do not occupy the same position. [4][3][1]

Historical Record

Aristotle brings the creature into a discussion of teeth. His History of Animals distinguishes tusks, interlocking points and flat chewing surfaces, comparing boars, lions, dogs, horses and cattle. He then says that the animals under discussion have no double rows of teeth—unless Ctesias is believed. The alleged exception receives a compact description, from the triple teeth to the projectile tail and a voice between panpipes and trumpet. Aristotle returns immediately afterward to tooth shedding. The marvel has entered an anatomical comparison, carrying its source’s name with it. [11]

Ctesias’s Indica does not survive intact. The manticore passage used here comes through Photius’s summary, while other authors quote or discuss the earlier writer. Nichols argues that excerptors favoured spectacular material and could pass over ordinary information. He points to Ctesias’s descriptions of elephants and parrots as accounts with recognizable observations beside the marvels. A lost work reconstructed from quotations may look stranger than it originally was. That does not vindicate the armed tail; it changes the question from whether one striking paragraph is credible to how much of its original surroundings has disappeared. [6]

Landscape & Associations

Pliny’s surrounding catalogue gives the manticore unusual neighbours. Close by are the monoceros, whose single horn accompanies a body compared with several animals, and the catoblepas, whose heavy, lowered head keeps its deadly gaze toward the ground. The basilisk follows, driving other serpents away with a hiss. These descriptions concentrate different dangers in a horn, a glance, a voice or a sting. The manticore belongs to this sequence of formidable bodies, each explained through the particular harm it can do. [1]

Variants & Kindred Beings

The portraits do not agree in every detail. Holland’s Pliny gives the manticore red eyes, whereas Photius’s translated summary gives pale blue ones. Pliny compares its voice with flute and trumpet sounding together. Elsewhere he attributes to Juba the claim that it imitates human speech. That report does not say it calls a particular victim by name; the nearby name-calling predator is the hyena. The resemblance of the passages makes their separation worth keeping. [1][4]

Aelian adds an attempt to prevent the danger before it develops: people catch the young while their tails lack stings and crush the tails with a stone. [3]

The Rochester Bestiary’s translated text returns to a concentrated bodily portrait: interlocking teeth, grey-blue eyes, a blood-red lion’s body and a scorpionlike tail. Its hissing sound resembles flutes, while its speed and jumping carry it across great spaces and obstacles. Here movement and appetite dominate. The creature need not acquire another weapon for the pursuit to become frightening; a human body has little prospect of outrunning it. [10]

Meaning & Belief

A human face could also give medieval artists a place to put human prejudice. The Morgan Library’s interpretation of the Worksop Bestiary, made around 1185, identifies the manticore’s Phrygian cap as a sign associated with eastern peoples and possibly with Jews for medieval viewers. Its commentary on the Fountains Abbey Bestiary, dated about 1325–1350, likewise discusses anti-Jewish facial stereotypes. These readings concern particular images and the hostility they embody. The face attached to the predator can turn a pictured appetite into an accusation against real people. That history belongs to the representation, not to the people it caricatures. [8]

Later Retellings & Reception

Sarah J. Biggs’s British Library survey places three medieval manticores beside one another: Harley MS 3244, folio 43v; Royal MS 12 C XIX, folio 29v; and the Rochester Bestiary, Royal MS 12 F XIII, folio 24v. The first is described as leonine. Her selection shows how much latitude a short description leaves an illustrator, even when the named animal remains the same. [7]

Print gave the creature another home. Lady Margaret Hall Library’s exhibition presents Edward Topsell’s 1607 Historie of Foure-Footed Beastes, where the Mantichora shares a volume with cats, wild cats, lions and lynxes. The exhibition leaves open how literal or symbolic earlier readers considered the creature. Its place among recognizable animals makes that question more pointed than an isolated picture would. A person turning those pages did not have to leave the animal book to meet a monster. [9]

A Viennese porcelain manticore made around 1735 has a more traceable journey. In the Metropolitan Museum’s account, its violet-framed human face turns the predator toward playful ornament. It appeared in a 1928 auction as a chimera, then entered the collection of Oscar Bondy, a Jewish industrialist in Vienna. Nazi authorities seized his property in 1938; the manticore was selected for Hitler’s planned museum in Linz. Bondy fled and died in New York in 1944. His widow, Elizabeth, pursued restitution after the war. The recovered object subsequently entered Hans Caspar Syz’s collection, and his sons gave it to The Met in 1995. Its porcelain body survived while the people who owned it endured dispossession and exile. [12]

Evidence & Open Questions

Pausanias, author of Description of Greece, offers the tiger as an explanation for Ctesias’s beast. He thinks fear has enlarged the teeth and armed the tail; distance, speed and turning in sunlight could have made a striped animal look uniformly red. This is his proposal, not a recovered identification of the royal gift. He is also no automatic opponent of strange animals. After warning against haste and disbelief, he says that he believes in winged snakes and a winged scorpion. His account leaves a particularly revealing image: the manticore’s red body breaking back into a tiger’s stripes, in the argument of a writer still willing to believe other wonders. [2]

Sources & Manuscript Notes

The Ctesias material survives here through Photius. Aristotle, Aelian, Pliny, Philostratus and Pausanias give separately authored responses to related reports. Nichols studies that transmission. The medieval and printed records identify particular representations; The Met follows one porcelain figure through seizure and restitution. [4][11][3][1][5][2][6][7][8][9][10][12]
