One cup is missing. The dragon circles its barrow, searching for the intruder who passed its sleeping head. Finding no one, it waits for night. In Beowulf, the escape of a frightened man is about to become a calamity for a kingdom. [5]
Read the manuscriptA European dragon may be a hoard’s jealous guardian, a saint’s defeated enemy or a kingdom’s emblem. The name gathers creatures from distinct stories and objects. British Library curator Sarah J. Biggs finds dragons in devotional books, bestiaries, heroic adventures and heraldry, with bodies as varied as their settings. [2]
Older English names can make the creature seem unfamiliar. In Eiríkr Magnússon and William Morris’s translation of Völsunga saga, Fafnir is both a worm and a drake. Neither word makes him small or harmless. His passage shakes the ground, and the trail he leaves is large enough to make his intended killer question the advice he has been given. [6]
The last dragon of Beowulf wakes to a theft. A man fleeing punishment has stumbled into its barrow and carried away a golden cup. He gives the vessel to his ruler and secures peace for himself. Behind him, the guardian searches the ground, circles its dwelling and discovers what is gone. It cannot find the thief. At night it rises in flame and burns the homes of the Geats, including the hall of their king, Beowulf. By dawn it is back beside the treasure. [5]
Beowulf has ruled for fifty winters. Now he orders a shield made of iron: wood will be useless against this enemy. He takes eleven companions to the coast, with the unwilling cup-taker leading the way. Before the stone entrance he tells the warriors to wait. The combat, he declares, belongs to him. A stream issuing from the barrow is hot with the creature’s fire. He raises his voice, and the dragon answers. [5]
The king’s first sword blow fails to cut deeply enough. Flame pours around him; his companions run to the woods. Only Wiglaf comes forward, remembering what they owe the ruler who armed and rewarded them. His wooden shield burns away, and he takes shelter beneath Beowulf’s. The king strikes the dragon’s head, but his sword Naegling breaks. The creature closes its teeth around his neck. Wiglaf drives his blade lower into its body, diminishing the fire, and Beowulf draws his knife to finish the killing. Two men have done what one could not. [5]
The victory cannot save the king. Poison swells in his wound as Wiglaf washes him and loosens his helmet. Beowulf asks to see the treasure. His companion enters the barrow, gathers vessels and a shining banner, then hurries back, afraid of finding him already dead. The king lives long enough to thank God for what he believes he has won for his people. He asks for a mound above the sea, a landmark sailors will recognize as Beowulf’s Barrow. After giving Wiglaf his own gold collar and battle gear, he dies beside the hoard.
In Cadw’s modern Welsh retelling, conflict between a resident red dragon and an invading white one spreads suffering across Wales. Crops fail and people fall ill. Lludd lures the creatures to a cauldron of mead, wraps them in silk once they are overcome, and buries them at Dinas Emrys in Eryri. Peace returns. Centuries later, Vortigern tries to raise a fortress on the hill, but its walls repeatedly collapse. Merlin advises excavation. The dragons are freed, resume their fight and leave the red one victorious; the fortress can finally stand. Lludd’s solution has become a later ruler’s building problem. [4]
The dragon can also be held still in an image of victory. A South German limewood carving, made in Swabia around 1460–1470 and now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, shows Saint George pressing his foot into the creature’s neck. Paint and gilding enlivened the wood. The museum connects the subject with a thirteenth-century account of George rescuing a Libyan town and with his later patronage of crusaders and chivalric orders. The defeated body beneath the saint makes protection visible. [3]
These works belong to different histories of reading. Francis B. Gummere’s English translation of Beowulf and the Magnússon–Morris saga translation make medieval heroic narratives available through later literary voices. Thomas Honegger’s 2019 study, Introducing the Medieval Dragon, approaches the subject through scholarship, religion, folklore and literature. Its opening uses the stolen cup to bring the reader into Beowulf’s catastrophe; its preface recalls an interest nourished by Tolkien and the dragon lore of central Switzerland. [8][5][6]
The Aberdeen Bestiary gives its dragon a crest and a small mouth. Its tail can entangle and suffocate even an elephant; it needs no poison. It locates dragons in India and Ethiopia, then makes their entangling power an image of the Devil catching people in sin. Yet the university’s commentary points out that the accompanying picture supplies wings and conspicuous teeth. The neighboring basilisk is different again: its gaze can kill without the dragon’s enclosing grip. [1]
Fafnir’s blood crosses a different boundary. Touching it to his tongue gives Sigurd access to speech that was already happening around him. The birds are discussing his predicament while he cooks for another man. Understanding them changes whom he can trust. The wonder is therefore an act of hearing as much as a new power: the apparently ordinary surroundings have information that human company has concealed. [6]
Beowulf’s barrow held a human loss before it held a dragon. The poem interrupts the theft to describe the last survivor of an earlier people burying their treasures there. Everyone who might wear the armor, polish the cup or enjoy the hall is dead. He commits their possessions to the earth because no living community remains to use them. His speech remembers a vanished world through its sounds and movements: the harp, the hawk, horses stamping in the dwelling place. The dragon later finds the hoard and keeps it for three hundred winters. [5]
That history changes the cave. Its wealth is the residue of another society’s extinction, lying beside the sea near a headland. When Wiglaf enters, he finds neglected vessels and rusty helmets among the gold. A bright woven banner illuminates the floor. The chamber is splendid and decayed at once, and Beowulf’s final request will put another monument to a lost life on the coast. The land holds more than a monster’s hiding place; it already contains people whom the poem has paused to mourn. [5]
Medieval illustrators did not settle on one dragon body. Biggs’s British Library survey includes a lizard-like opponent for George and a lion-like creature around Saint Margaret. In an illustrated Alexander romance, Royal MS 20 B XX, folio 78v brings together winged and horned dragons with two-headed monsters bearing eight legs, crowns and eyes along their bodies. Elsewhere the library’s examples give dragons places in a constellation and Tudor heraldry. A sinister religious interpretation cannot account for every setting in which the creature appears. [2]
Wiglaf’s rebuke after Beowulf’s death turns treasure into a question of obligation. The companions carry the weapons and armor their king gave them, yet fled when he needed their help. What good were those gifts if their recipients would not defend the giver? The dragon fight exposes the failure of a relationship sustained in the hall by reward and promises. The surviving men possess the equipment of loyalty, while Wiglaf has supplied its action. His speech anticipates the loss of land and security once other rulers hear what happened. [5]
Sigurd’s encounter tests advice instead. Regin’s plan leaves him vulnerable to the dragon’s blood; the stranger improves it; Fafnir warns him about the gold; the birds warn him about Regin. Survival depends on choosing among voices with different interests in his fate. He accepts the counsel that reveals immediate betrayal and rejects the warning that would make him leave the wealth behind. The saga lets its successful killer remain someone whose judgment can still be questioned. [6]
Arthur Rackham’s illustration of Siegfried killing Fafner belongs to Wagner’s operatic adaptation, with names, weapons and tactics altered. MyNDIR, the University of Victoria image resource, identifies Nothung as the hero’s sword and describes Fafner as a giant transformed into a dragon to guard gold. It quotes scholar Árni Björnsson on Wagner’s omission of the pits: his hero confronts the creature openly. The image reproduces work associated with the 1911 Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods volume through a later collected edition. A familiar victory has changed its manner. Sigurd’s careful position beneath a passing body gives way to the visible confrontation that Rackham illustrates. [7]
The heroic encounters leave different questions after the killing. Sigurd has heard that the gold can ruin him, but rides toward his future with it. Beowulf believes the treasure can serve the people he is leaving behind. Wiglaf, who has brought it to him, must now sit beside a body he cannot revive. When the other warriors return, he is still trying to wake his king with water. The dragon’s breath has ceased. The young man’s care continues beyond the point at which it can bring an answer. [5][6]

Return to the Bestiary ↑The encounter with Fafnir in Völsunga saga starts with a more carefully laid trap. Regin, a smith and Fafnir’s brother, takes Sigurd to the dragon’s route across the heath. He tells him to dig a pit and strike upward as the creature passes on its way to drink. Sigurd asks what will happen when the blood comes down. Regin mocks his fear, then retreats. A long-bearded stranger supplies better advice: dig several pits to carry the blood away. The stranger vanishes, and Sigurd completes the work. [6]
Fafnir approaches, shaking the earth and breathing venom ahead of him. Sigurd waits underneath, then thrusts his sword below the left shoulder. When he pulls it free, blood covers his arm. The wounded creature lashes head and tail, breaking everything before it, and demands his killer’s name. Sigurd first evades the question before admitting who he is. The conversation turns from identity to the treasure. Fafnir warns that the gold will kill its next possessor too. Sigurd answers that he would abandon it if doing so could make him immortal; since everyone must die, he intends to take it. The dragon dies with its warning rejected. [6]
Regin returns to praise the deed, then grieves for his brother. He asks Sigurd to roast Fafnir’s heart. Testing the meat with a finger, Sigurd brings the blood to his tongue and suddenly understands the birds beside him. They say Regin plans to betray the man who trusts him. Sigurd draws Gram and cuts off the smith’s head. The new knowledge has made the moment after victory more dangerous than it appeared. [6]
After eating some of the heart, Sigurd follows Fafnir’s trail to a dwelling sunk into the earth, with iron doors and beams. He finds so much gold that he doubts two or three horses could carry it. Nevertheless, he fills two chests and loads them onto Grani. The horse will not move until Sigurd mounts; then it travels as lightly as if it carried nothing. Hero and treasure leave together. The burden has become easy to carry, though the dying creature’s words have given him reason to fear it. [6]
