Prioneris clemanthe
Lepidoptera / Pieridae
Prioneris clemanthe is an Asian sawtooth with pale dorsal fields and a yellow, black-veined hindwing underside. Historical descriptions and Cambodian photographs document marked differences between male and female wing patterns.
Read the species account
The male’s ventral hindwing combines yellow fields, black venation and a red basal patch. [2]
Wallace described the female’s dorsal forewings as dark, with pale bands through the central cell and along the inner margin, followed by two curved rows of pale marks. The creamy-white hindwing has a broad dark border extending along the veins and enclosing faint rounded pale spots. [6]
A strong wing outline encloses distinct red, yellow and dark fields. The basal red marking provides a small accent against the broader ventral pattern.
Protect framed specimens from direct daylight, moisture and pests. Retain identification and locality information with the collection record. [5]
