Papilio gallienus
Lepidoptera / Papilionidae
Papilio gallienus has dark wings crossed by a narrow pale-yellow band. African accounts distinguish its band geometry from similar swallowtails and associate it with wet rain forest.

The African treatment cites Schultze’s historical observations of rapid, persistent flight and early-morning activity. [1]
Museum Koenig interprets the ventral pattern as mimicry of Acraea butterflies protected by toxic body compounds. [2]
The name Papilio gallienus dates to Distant’s description in 1879. [1]
The illustration preserves the narrow pale-yellow band and its oval forewing elements within dark wing fields. Bold contours retain the swallowtail silhouette. [2][1]
Keep narrow markings and fragile wing edges protected from handling, direct light and moisture. A closed enclosure reduces dust and pest exposure.
How does the band differ from that of Papilio cyproeofila? The African treatment describes the P. gallienus hindwing band as yellower, narrower and more strongly curved. [1]
Museum Koenig describes the male pattern and geographical range. The African Papilio treatment provides the comparison with P. cyproeofila, historical flight observations and nomenclature. [2][1][3]
