Graphium chironides
Lepidoptera / Papilionidae
The veined jay has dark, tailless wings with segmented pale markings. In the 2024 male comparison, the Malay Peninsula subspecies malayanum has broader discal patches and a less curved forewing than Graphium bathycles bathycloides.

The documented Thai specimen has pale segmented markings across dark wings and rounded, tailless hindwings. [1]
In the 2024 comparison of males, G. chironides malayanum has broader discal markings and a less falcate, or strongly curved, forewing than G. bathycles bathycloides. [2]
The 2024 authors found that the earlier comparison had omitted malayanum and misidentified or misinterpreted other comparison material. Re-examination of male wings and genitalia, together with mitochondrial COI sequences, supported the validity of malayanum and the separation of chironides from bathycles. [2]
Paired dorsal and ventral views show the segmented pale markings and tailless hindwing outline on both surfaces.
Bold contours retain the rounded, tailless silhouette. Flat pale patches remain separated by dark wing areas.
Inspect physical specimens through their enclosure and handle the frame rather than the wings. Keep the display away from direct sunlight, damp and concentrated heat.
Why was malayanum reinstated? The 2024 revision found differences in male wing shape, discal markings, genitalia and mitochondrial COI sequences from G. bathycles bathycloides. [2]
Inayoshi documents Thai specimens and paired wing views. The 2024 revision supplies the male diagnostic comparison and genetic evidence. [1][2]
