Graphium bathycles
Lepidoptera / Papilionidae
The striped jay has dark wings crossed by segmented pale markings. A 2024 taxonomic study confirmed its distinction from the similar veined jay, Graphium chironides, using adult morphology, male genitalia and mitochondrial DNA.

The museum adult has dark wings crossed by pale greenish markings, with a second series of smaller pale marks near the margins. Dark veins and wing areas divide the central band into separate patches. [1]
In the 2024 comparison of males, G. bathycles bathycloides has narrower discal markings and a more falcate, or strongly curved, forewing than G. chironides malayanum. [2]
The 2024 revision separated G. bathycles bathycloides from G. chironides malayanum using male wing characters, differences in the genitalia and divergent mitochondrial COI sequences. These comparisons support the distinction between two visually similar swallowtails. [2]
Graphium bathycles is the species name; bathycloides is the subspecies used in the Singapore account. [3]
The dorsal view shows the segmented central band and smaller outer markings. The ventral view provides the corresponding underside pattern within the complete wing outline.
Bold contours preserve the wing outline and separate pale patches, retaining the dark spaces within the central band.
Inspect physical specimens through their enclosure and handle the frame rather than the wings. Keep the display away from direct sunlight, damp and concentrated heat.
How does the striped jay differ from the veined jay? In the 2024 male comparison, bathycloides has narrower discal markings and a more curved forewing than chironides malayanum. [2]
The museum documents an identified adult; the Singapore account supplies regional photographs and nomenclature. Phon, Kirton and Kuah provide the 2024 morphological and genetic comparison. [1][3][2]
