Delias crithoe
Lepidoptera / Pieridae
An Indonesian jezebel with a yellow hindwing underside and broad red basal band, represented by geographically named island and mountain populations.
Read the species account
The hindwing underside combines a yellow field with a broad red band near the base. [2]
Wallace’s account of Javan females describes whiter forewing patches and large white apical spots. Their ventral yellow hindwing field stops short of the red base, leaving an intervening black band with an irregular edge. [4]
The specialist treatment records Indonesian populations on Java, Sumatra, Belitung and the Batu Islands, with additional named mountain populations on Sumatra. [2]
A mating pair was photographed on Sumatra in January 2023. [2]
Wallace treated the species as Thyca crithoe in 1867 and cited Boisduval’s earlier combination Pieris crithoe. His account included male and female material from Java. [4]
The illustrations retain the red basal band and adjacent yellow hindwing field.
Keep the enclosure away from direct sunlight, dampness and large changes in temperature or humidity. Handle the frame, clean only its exterior, and inspect for loose fragments, moisture and pests. Retain the specimen’s original labels and follow the enclosure maker’s care instructions. [3]
