Feel the potting mix before watering. Let the top few centimetres dry, while checking moisture deeper in the pot. [6]
Avoid leaving the whole root ball very dry for a prolonged period. [4]
Water enough to wet the root ball, let excess escape and empty the saucer or decorative cover pot. [10]
Check again as the mix dries. Light, temperature, container size and growth change how often a plant needs water. [10]
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during spring and summer, following the product’s houseplant directions. [7]
Pruning is optional. Remove dead growth and shorten overly long stems when you want a bushier plant. [6]
Root-moisture problems can cause yellowing or wilting. Check conditions before adjusting water. [15]
Strong direct sun can scorch this species’ leaves. [4]
ASPCA lists Peperomia obtusifolia as non-toxic to cats and dogs. [17]
Keep foliage, fallen leaves and cuttings beyond pets that chew plants. Eating plant material can upset a pet’s stomach. [18]
For signs of illness or suspected poisoning, contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435. Provide the botanical name. [19]
Keep the plant, cuttings and loose potting material beyond young children’s reach. Keep the botanical name with its pot. [20]
For human plant ingestion in the United States, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Elsewhere, contact your local poison service. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, seizures, collapse or inability to awaken. [21]
