Use a bright indoor position with filtered light. Leave room around the crown and turn attention to new growth if stems weaken or leaves become unusually small. [3]
Provide consistent warmth and moderate humidity. Keep the crown away from cold glass and sudden hot or cold air currents. [4]
Feed during active growth at the product label rate; pause when growth slows. [7]
Check for crowded roots and exhausted mix during active growth. Slip the plant from its pot, inspect roots and repot modestly larger when needed. [8]
Keep the original planting depth; settle fresh mix around roots and water in. [9]
For a tree trained in a shallow bonsai container, plan root work around its individual shape and vigor with an experienced grower. [3]
Shorten overlong shoots just above a leaf during active growth. Avoid heavy reshaping of a trained trunk; wear gloves because white sap may irritate skin. [4]

Ficus microcarpa can cause a skin allergy. Wear gloves when cutting; keep sap away from the face and eyes. [3]
Pet Poison Helpline warns that Ficus sap can irritate a pet’s mouth, digestive tract and skin. Prevent chewing and contact with cut stems. [11]
Human poisoning (U.S.): 1-800-222-1222. Medical emergencies: 911. [12]
Pet poisoning: veterinarian; ASPCA 888-426-4435 (consultation fee). [13]
Ficus microcarpa has small glossy leaves useful for a miniature-tree display. Rubber tree, Ficus elastica, offers a much larger-leaved outline. Both can grow beyond their original container presentation. [4]
